Has anyone had to change their tyres yet?
If so has anyone moved away from the standard fit Contisport Contact 2's / Bridgestone S001's / Pirelli Pzero's and what did you go for? Any appreciable differences / recommendations?
Just curious ..... :nerd:

In a word, Michelin.
-
Pilot Sport 2's / Pilot Sport 3's / Pilot Super Sports?
-
Any or all of the above. PS2s were fantastic and iirc have been phased out in favour of PS3 replacement.
-
Had one of mine replaced due to slow leak....
Dunlop SportMaxx RT - can't complain. In the wet a notch better than Pirellis so I heard.

When I change mine, it'll be Michelin PS3. Excellent all-round tyre. Grippy in all conditions, well wearing, decent rolling resistance, quite quiet. £120 a corner fitted at Costco. Sometimes there is a Michelin promotion on which gives you a £40 fuel card for every pair you buy, making them effectively £100 a corner. There's one on now that's due to finish sometime in March.
Had a pair on my Scirocco when the P7s wore down - excellent tyre.

Conti Sport 5...amazing grip in wet

I don't have my gtd yet but have been thinking my first replacement will be Vredestein Sessanta's. 80 quid a corner and they were stunning on my 2.2 civic, much preferred them to pilot sport's on that car and a good match for the torque - quiet, great steering feel and amazing in the wet. Look great too :)
-
Michelin don't come anywhere near the top tyre buys yet everyone who has/had them raves about them. Vredestein are always near the top but not many people have them as not many places stock them. Continental's on my old Leon fr were brilliant but I've had bridgestones twice and they were fine when new but got worse with age (more than you'd expect).
-
True, I used to get them from elite direct (great next day service), and just pop along to a local fitter for fitting.

Out of interest how many miles did you get out of your first set?
I got 13800 out of the conti2's, got goodyear efficient on now - not great in wet a lot more tramping but OK in dry

I've got Contis on my GTD and the fronts are already down to 2mm......after only 9000 miles  I expected them to probably last around 13-15k, just a bit surprised that after 3 months I'm looking to get new tyres already!
With regards tyres I'll get what I'm given by the lease company

Goodyear are called that for a reason. You may just get a good year from them but that's it

My Bridgestones seem to be getting better with age - not massively so, but they're less sh!te than they were. Most of these OEM fit tyres that are obsolete for the end user come with a reduced tread - 6mm instead of the 7 or 8mm that we're used to on our bought tyres. My Bridgestones are at about 4mm at just under 5k miles - I doubt they'll see 12k miles on the fronts.
Aren't Dunlop and Goodyear the same company?
With wheels like ours, I'd be very careful of where you get bought in tyres fitted - some backstreet fitter will be wrecking the finish on the wheels using old tech equipment to get the old tyre off and the new tyre on. Paid the price on my Scirocco - luckily though, the wheels are painted and so it wasn't much of an issue to get them looking pristine again.

i'll be lucky for 3 months then  almost to 17k so nearly due an oil change too...

Try pilot sport cup 2's, work for the cupra round the ring

Way too scary for everyday use, surely?
I had them on my GT3 and had to stop driving it (completely) when it was raining ....

7k miles and the Sport Contact 2's on front of my car probably have 2mm until they are on the wear indicators.
-
My last GTI was on about 8k miles when i changed it. Wasn't too much tread left on the fronts, probably would have got another 2k miles out of them.

you must torture them poor tyres :D
my front ones got 5mm left after 12k miles (2.0 TDI) ... don't thrash it but also don't drive like a grandma...
-
I think it's the GTI's influence

At only 1650 miles done, too early to comment on wear but my Bridgestones (S001) seem to have 'bedded' in now and so far, had no issues with them - they certainly give a very sharp, firm ride while so far, no traction issues. Checked the tread when I got the car and they'd 8mm on them. Incidentally, there's an interesting article about them on Tyrereviews.co.uk at the moment.
Having said that, I'll probably go with Goodyear F1 Assym 2s when they need replaced after my very positive experience with them on my Mk 6. Long way off though but hopefully there'll be some feedback by then!
-
Red Tornado: I underestimated my mileage, i'm at about 5600, with 4.5mm left. At current rate, these will be illegal at about 10k miles if mine were 8mm new also (didn't check - maybe I should check my rears that'll be hardly worn at all).

As stated on here many times Bridgestones are very temperature sensitive - poor when cold... As a tyre for winter time very poor... Will become acceptable as ambient temperature rises and we, hopefully, see less rain...
