I will be selling my GTI soon. Obviously any prospective buyer is going to want to give it a blast.
God forbid, should they put it in a ditch, what are the insurance ramifications...?
Just wondering what your experiences have been when buying / selling privately.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Billy

They should be insured to drive the vehicle so insurance is down to them, if they cause any damage to your vehicle, they are still liable to pay out of their own pocket as most insurance when driving other vehicles is 3rd party only.
I would check two things before letting them sit in the driving seat, 1 they have an insurance certificate that says they are covered to drive other vehicles with the owners permission, 2 they have the money to pay for the vehicle if they write it off.
People test drive cars with no intension of buying them so they might not have the money if the worst happens so double check, and if your still worried type out a little disclaimer and get them to sign it.

If your not sure don't let them drive it, I respect that put some people off but better to be safe than sorry.

Again, I'd emphasis the point of actually seeing the document which states they are covered 3rd party to drive other vehicles with the owners consent. A big misconception is that full comprehensive policies have this as standard but they do not. Mine got changed last year without notice, and clearly states on my current one I am not insured to drive another vehicle in any way.
In fact, don't sell your GTI, just keep it. Safer that way. Much safer.
