Hey guys haveing probles with the fuel gauge it says I have a full tank but I know I have less in the tank. Had taken in to have some jobs done and the guys said its my clocks I know it cant be the clocks only because im still geting my revs and mph reading any ideas what this fuel gauge problem is just a pain haveing to fill up all the time with the needle saying full
-
Could be the needle for fuel sticking. if thats happening then it wownt affect revs etc.
could also be that the little motor for the needle is broke, again wownt affect rev counter etc.
if it isnt your clock then it will be sensor in the tank, or wiring fault somewhere between
-
Well pulled the sender wire plug off to see if the needle drops and yes it has droped pluged it back in and went back to full tank
-
Also did some reading on the fuel pump that the float can be stuck any pics up on how to take it out and replace?
-
under the back seats there is a black plate with 3 screws. Remove the plate to see the pump. Then unplug the wires. THen unplug the 2 hoses, but do them slow because back pressure will cause a lot of fuel to come out the pipes. Do not pull the pipes to hard because they are very short and don't move to easy. Then there is a big black ring around the top of the pump that screws off. You might need a hammer to get it off. When the ring is off you can pull the pump up slowly, don't break the float. Also the pump will still have about a ahlf a litre off fuel still in it so keep it upright

Nice one for that ill do that this weekend and keep you posted

update....
Wen the car starts up the needle has moved to about half full but wen the car is at a stand still it slowly moves to full do you think this is to do with the clocks not filled it up to the top for a few days

i have same problem
already chafed sense in tank only cost a £10
I'm sure it is clocks
when i put fuel in it thinks there is a full tank when it had half a tank and i put £10 of diesel in
when car is off clocks reset back to 0 as they should though
it does read half tank but when i have had a full tank in and brimmed it it reads full but takes forever to show half it does not know when it is 3/4 full its either full or half
I'm waiting for it to run out of fuel one day lol
going to take a look over weekend probably tomorrow afternoon
I'm going to get in the tank and move the float up and down and watch the gauge on the clocks for movement but I'm tempted to get a new set of clocks as I'm sure that is the problem

Mine always runs out so fast, it's a common fault with golfs.

i'm looking to get a set of clocks but been told it easy putting them in but hard to programmer the clocks also you need to find the part number as well so they match.... let us know how you get on man be for i take it to a vw specialist

VW won't touch it unless you fit brand new clocks.
Even if you find clocks with the same part number it's not just a case of fitting them in and driving away unfortunately. The clocks will need to be coded to your keys as the immobiliser is part of them. If you a have post 2001 car the ECU will also need coding to clocks and keys.
You need to find someone with VAG COM and also VAG TACHO to do all this for you
