Hi all. 6500km done now in my gti and it looks like I need an oil top up. Oil lamp not on bit it's in the "ok to top up area" and suspect it would take about 0.5~1 litre to bring it back up to top. I was just wondering what oil should I top up with. I'm guessing castrol 5w-30 synthetic? Has anyone got a definitive answer on this, would be much appreciated. :smug:  couldn't be happier with the car, no faults to report yet.

Yep castrol fine, I use mobile 1 0-30
-
my dealer gave me some at pick up..it lives in one of the cubbies down the side of the boot
-
If in doubt - check the manual and it will list the correct oil. There is a VW code for the oil. I had the warning light appear yesterday and a litre took me from the lowest mark to the highest on the dipstick.

Thanks for the answers guys! I have checked the manual and will be going down the route of time/distance route instead of longlife( too long without fresh oil IMO ). So I'm going with vw spec502.00. Hope this will be fine. Got 2 different answers from 2 different vw network dealers ! :embarrassed:

The type of oil depends on which service schedule you're on (according to the manual). So although I'm on the "Service Pack" and going to have it changed every 10,000 miles - for top ups - I've just bought a litre of the higher classified / graded Castrol Edge 5W30 (spec 504) which they use for the "Longlife" intervals (can last up to 20,00 miles) ....
I think you can also use a 5W40 grade too .... (Spec 502 or 507)?

I was given a leaflet in my service book with the correct oil for the gti& it's ( castrol edge professional longlife 5w-30)

My oil was fine, but just had an amber warning for my brake fluid, it had fallen below the minimum mark. Topped up with DOT4 compliant stuff - do VW not fill fluids to anywhere near the max these days? No sign of a leak anywhere, and 5k miles wearing of the pads isn't going to make much of a difference to the level.
-
Very worrying if dealerships arent checking the levels part of the PDI.
My GTI came with a bottle for Castrol oil  , I am going to stuck to using Castrol

5k on the clock and mine was on the min level. I topped up with 5W30 supplied buy the dealer on the day of collection...
-
So i'm guessing that Castrol Edge 5W 30 is fine to use?
It says in the manual to use VW 502.00 compliant oil for time/distance services and to use 504.00 for long life servicing. I'm on the service pack (every 10,000 miles) so technically I should use 5W40 which is 502.00 compliant?
But will using the 5W30, 504.00 higher grade cause any issues for topping up?
-
I would advise you try and stick to using LongLife Castrol Oil regardless of the service regime your on.
All my previous VAG cars have been run on Castrol, it's good oil. :)
If you look at your engine oil cap it will even have Castrol printed on it ;)
-
The oil cap is in a really awkward place isn't it!? Back of the engine surrounded in red hot engine components. I had to give up earlier and will need a funnel to get the oil in.

That's what I'm doing too! :)

My oil was alarmingly below the minimum mark on the dipstick but my check engine oil light never came on?
Half a litre has pulled me about a quarter of the way into the middle. How low does your oil level have to be before the light comes on?

I reckon the light would have been come on imminently, if anything like our Polo GTI (although the sump is bound to be larger on the Golf) the 'max-to-min' marks represent about 1 litre of oil, probably a little more on the Golf. The oil light does illuminate early for obvious reasons but I think you got there just before it had chance to come on.

For the ones that had top up oil in the boot from the dealers, what type of Castrol Edge 5w30 was it? Was it Professional Long Life 3 or FST?
Does anybody know if there is any difference between Castrol Edge Professional Longlife 3 5W30 and Castrol Edge 5w30 FST? I've had a look on Castrol's website and I couldn't find the Longlife version and for my reg number it says it's recommended the FST version.
