Title: DSG MK7 Sport Mode
Post by: simoor on 06 March 2014, 09:29
Hi All, I thought I would keep my car in Sport mode for a while just to test it out, but for some reason when I cruise at 30 mph it stays in 2nd gear, I feel like it should up-shift when at a constant speed? Is this correct or does is just assume you’re going to flaw it and go faster than 30? It does change up when I go faster than 30 mph. Just wondering if this was normal and maybe I should just stick to Normal mode

Yes thats quite normal as DSG sports mode is designed to get the maximum rev range out of each gear before it changes up.

Sounds like its working just fine. In 'Sport' – DSG holds the gears in a high rev range (ready for you to floor it). The reason it feels wrong is that in normal mode DSG shifts up the gears very quickly (too quick for some). All in the name of fuel economy

Personally I feel the jump between 'Normal' and 'Sport' mode is too extreme. Kinda feels like there needs to be an intermediate state like; Normal, Sport and Sport +

I tend to select sports mode then paddle shift as the up shift rev level is way too high for me.

I totally agree H-5-0

I think they should have a new intermediate setting and call the current Drive Eco or something - you would then have:

Ecco (what we now call D)
Drive (a new intermediate setting)
Sport - (same as it is now).

This would be a huge improvement for DSG IMHO.

Obviously someone who does not read the instructions but found out by chance the other day that when in Drive and pull shift down it changes to sport! and obviously do same again it goes back to Drive and there has been me changing the setting via the button/screen till now.

Makes decision and the to moving between the 2 modes so much easier!

Which in context of this thread means you can stay in your town mode D and  when you really have conditions for sport you can instantly switch and when back to slower conditions you can go back to D at flick of the DSG.

Does hang onto gears too much in Sport if not in right conditions and I tend to just paddle up if want to stay in sport.

Yep, this changes to sport mode. Not sure if it changes any of the other settings in the same way that selecting the mode via the driver selection profile though?

Have things changed then? When in D in my Passat, changing down with the paddles puts it in Manual mode, not Sport. If driven spiritedly it will stay in Manual until it senses that you are not trying anymore and slip back into Auto. I can also select Auto myself by pulling and holding the + paddle.

My presumption is it stays at your current D setting IE:Comfort switches to 'Sport' and then back to origuinal D 'Comfort'

Unless already in Sport it maps to the 'normal' D setting if decide to switch.

Either way it is a great way to switch between D and Sport in the second it takes to pull DSG lever back as conditions dictate and kicking self for not knowing about it previously!

This is not paddles this is the DSG lever. If pull it back it switches between Sport and D.

The paddles will override to just manual and then reset to auto if not carry on using paddles.

Yes Drive mode is awful that upshifts so early that your car feels like it's lost 100bhp. You have to push the pedal quite far for it to drive quickly. Should definitely be a setting in the middle.

The best setting for maximum control is pushing the DSG stick to the left and then using the paddle shifters for changing gears as then it doesn't change gear for you or reset to automatic. It only downshifts when you're slowing down to a stop.

Never used S  in 9 years of DSG driving, not sure what the point of it is.

I use D when stuck in traffic but most of the time I use the paddles in manual, that's why I added it and will always in the future.

The D and S modes are just a compromise, they are never going to predict the road ahead ie hills, junctions, overtaking etc. and it would be nearly impossible to do, I don't think a third mode would really help any.

Mike, I think you and I are getting confused. I'm pretty sure they are on about the selectable driving modes. Eco, Normal and Sport (or something like that). Not Drive and Sport gearbox modes.

There talking about the gearbox not selectable driving modes. In DSG.

Not Drive and Sport gearbox modes.
Lol, no !  Thats exactly what we are talking about!

Mike - really you have never used S mode? I use it constantly to alter the way the car changes gear - however, unike most people who use it to make the car accelerate faster I use it to get an engine braking effect when approaching junctions/roundabouts/ works very effectivley and significantly reduces the need to use the brakes.

I expect this is even easier with the Mk.7 as the shift lever is spring loaded (as opposed to the earler versions which had the own indent - and, inexplicably, required the lock button to be depressed to move in to it...

I just find the programmed modes never change gear when I want to, more so the S mode which just seems to have a mind of its own.

I bought the DSG so I could have a really fast changing manual which is the mode I use most and still love.
When I am lazy or just stuck in slow moving traffic I just stick it in D and it is effortless
Even on the motorway I would have it in manual, as there is plenty of torque in sixth without the box changing down, which is what it does if it was in one of the programmed modes and you tramp on the accelerator.
If I want engine braking I just knock it down the gears myself.

I do use S sometimes to do a rapid down change from say 6th to 3rd by moving the lever from manual to S and then straight back to manual.

Interesting - just shows how many ways its possible to use DSG and that everyone finds their own way of getting on with it (well apart from Jimble!)....

Sometimes it's very useful to wake the car from the economical torpor of "Eco Pro" mode - either knocking the sift lever back for DSG "S" or flicking a paddle for fast overtakes where you don't want to kick down.
Of course when you are (briefly) in DSG "S" - it's much quicker to kick down and when you've overtaken, you can just nude the lever back again to go back into "D" ....

I don't particularly like driving the car in the full sports mode with everything to the max. The suspension feels like it moves around a bit more, to make it more adjustable in "Normal" mode and the DSG in Sport feels hyperactive as the OP said.
