Title: Detailing a new car.
Post by: gazmondo35 on 04 March 2014, 18:08
With the weather looking fine & dry this weekend I was thinking of doing a full  detail on my new mk7gti,but not sure if it will need clay bar, Polish etc, or just wash & wax with some dodo juice.

Pre wash treatments I.e wheels
Pressure wash
Snow foam
Pressure wash rinse
Wash
Clay bar
Wash again
Rinse
Dry
Windows
Dress tyres
Seal
Wax
= job done in less than three hours, my record is 1.5 but I was totally fooked afterwards

Do not polish, a new car shouldn't need polishing. By definition polish removes minor layers of lacquer.

Well put. I was going to ask the same question. Would you recommend sealing, or using a glaze perhaps, and applying with a DA? Or go easy by hand?

Thanks for detail list, it's most helpful, could you recommend a good Sealer.

Great advice.  How the hell did you manage all that in 1.5 hrs.  You must be a human dynamo

Glazes tend to have 'filler' properties which can help to disguise some fine scratches/swirls.  They will also enhance gloss, but don't really offer much in the way of protection.

Sealant gives good protection and adding wax on top gives greater depth to the shine or gloss.  Sealant on it's own can give quite a sterile/clinical shine.  I would always top sealant off with wax as Ginge advised.

Sealant can be applied by DA, but best done by hand imo.  Let it cure for about half hour then buff off by hand using microfibres.  Avoid getting on trim as it can stain.

I don't know how you can do it all in the time Neil. It takes me at least 1.5 hours just to wash it. Given the curing times and that my garage only has room for me to do half a car at a time, that would take me all day.

Has a certain ring to it

The BM yes I'm afraid so, I commute over 100 miles a day and I can't stand my own car being dirty. I know - sad, I need help!

Mine gets done weekly, usually every Monday morning and the postman always ribs me about it.  I once did it twice in a week but that was only because it got sprayed all over with filthy water an hour after I'd just cleaned it.    For me, once a week is enough.

For me it's every Saturday it sets me up for the day,& I enjoy it ,but it seems for most people that's a bit weird.

Not weird at all mate, that's the way to do it. I'm the freak, lol!

I've told the wife when we move house I want an R32 so I have something nice to keep pristine, my theory is then I won't be as obsessive about my daily driver. Not sure she's taking the bait though - YET!

Same with the neighbors here, they say if I wash my car anymore I'm going to shrink it to the size of a polo!
