Great find Ian. Let's hope you can activate via VCDS (VAGCOM)
-
My understanding is there is no light source in the headlight for the other "U"...so im guessing this guy has added some hardware of some description.
Ian
-
As Ian has suggested i reckon he's fitted the R lights.

Not unless he's took them apart too, those headlights have the red GTI stripe in them. I am guessing he has managed to fit the inner U elements with LED bulbs with a power source from somewhere.
-
Ive always been quite handy at these sort of things.....id like to get a good look inside my headlight unit to see whats involved and what wold need doing. Does anyone know how involved it is to get a headlight unit out...??

Although look like none red stripe units...same result

It really wouldn't surprise me if the actual inner U had the holes/mouldings for the LEDs already in them, just without them fitted - it would make sense not to produce 2 different mouldings for the lightguide but you never know. How hard is it to actually see the rear of the inner U?

You must be able to get them apart, Jean Pierre has done his in pink!

I think he just stuck a pink stripe on the outside, inline with the red one? Unless there is a better close up?

OR...that second picture is from a show in Japan....maybe aftermarket units.

From what I can make out a Japanese company Craftsman sell DRL kits to install the outside DRL the same as we get on the GTI/GTD as standard in Europe. This guy has used one of these kits to also install the inside DRL as well as the outside one.
Here's the link to the Craftsman site in Japanese I'm afraid, http://shop.craftsman-jp.com/shopdetail/026001000008/026/001/X/page1/order/

£73 isn't bad!
It seems to suggest you need to solder something into the fuse box behind the glovebox... Puts me right off!

You are right... The guy simply stuck a pink strip on the outside of the headlight.
One of his YouTube videos shows a close up of the headlight and you can clearly see the red stripe behind it.

From 1:50 in this video:

It's definatley stuck on but i reckon it's stuck on the inside, look at the reflections. ???

If you pause the video around the 45 secs mark you can see the pink tape overlaid over the red stripe.

Watching this with interest. Would love double U DRL's on the GTI.

Love those BBS alloys! Cracking looking car
-
Looking great, are those BBS SR alloys?
How much did the R headlights set you back and what coding/wiring was needed?
-
Looks lovely. Are they R headlights with a GTD grill?

Found this on a Chinese exporter website.
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/NEW-arrived-Volkswagen-Golf-7-GTI-bifocal-lens-double-U-LED-xenon-headlight-assembly/1853762780.html
Scroll down to the Product Details for more photos. It's only a matter of time before they make some with the GTI's red stripe but I don't know if I'd fit headlights(or anything) made in China on a German car; just doesn't sound right. :undecided: Hope there's a German company manufacturing something of this sort. The LED Amber signal lights is what caught my attention though.. Looks awesome!

Unfortunately, while both the 'U's are illuminated, some of the other functionality of the OEM headlamps has been lost. There doesn't appear to be a static cornering light between the 2 'U's, and in some of the descriptions it seems to suggest that the adaptive function (headlamps swivelling left/right) also isn't present.
I think if the double U running lights is wanted, then the best solution currently is to fit OEM R headlights, along with an R grille, and then potentially selling on your original GTI/GTD headlamps to recoup some of the cost.
-
Found this on another china based shopping site, incredibly cheap but not very clear on what you're getting looks like a simple wiring loom and suggests that you lose static cornering lights.
Might be worth a punt?

If its just the wiring loom then that suggests the element is already there in the inner U.

Translation of description...
After a long wait, I finally saw the high 7 headlamps on the market.
Now the market is high compared to 7 headlights, Headlight has many advantages:
1, the original fan design, in addition to the other in order to enhance the design of beam-beam position, the contrast, then do not do outside is almost no domestic production. Even the back cover are the same as the original and imported!
2, plug and play, no need to decode! Do not replace the BCM or change the coding.
3, dedicated ballast position, can be equipped with imported ballast, install the original location, not exposed wires and thread, reducing the failure rate!
4, cash halogen bulbs turn signal is not the same as other brands because of the LED headlight design is very cottage.
5, the headlamps equipped with static cornering assist lamp there, you can select the relevant accessories and fog linkage.
6, the professional factory of SAIC supporting the original lights, professional focus lights, quality and more secure!
The price for the single headlight assembly price (including bulbs and ballasts Wright), requires a pair of friends, please take 2.
Color temperature: 4300K and 6000K
Ballast: Snow Wright and Hylux
The LED headlamps our one year warranty, the ballast bulb warranty for three months
Configuration instructions:
1: Audi Volkswagen scrap imported Mitsubishi D3S ballast with original Philips bulb (not temporarily out of stock)
2 ballasts and domestic Shelley express Kai Wright Hylux domestic ballast bulb
3 and a half assembly, excluding ballast and bulbs

There ability to install their own riders, please refer headlights installation tutorial:

.... From that it sounds like you'd be buying the whole front light assembly no?

It is not from Germany but from Slovenia . My friend has changed GTI xenon lights with R xenon lights. He had some troubles with recoding (lights went on dashboard) but now is everything ok. Here https://www.facebook.com/avtokozmetikamp is link and just scroll down to see some pictures of his GTI.
