Title: Help on buying a 1.8T Estate with high miles
Post by: Godzilla on 15 February 2014, 12:24
Hope this is allowed here as it is for a Passat but it does have the 150bhp 1.8 Turbo engine

A local guy is selling a 1999 1.8T Passat Estate. It has 152k and no history. He said the cambelt etc has been done but no receipts to prove this as he said he lost them!  It is an estate with 7 months MOT and 4 months Tax.....He is wanting £850.

Shall I get it or give it a miss?

Budget a couple of hundred to get the cam belt done then, I wouldn't necessarily give it a miss for that reason as most of them you look out will probably need it done for peace of mind...

Thanks mate  Are these engines good as 150k and no service history is making me question it, but it is just up the road from me making it that much easier sale wise.

Also if driven with care I wonder what the average MPG would be on it?  I do a lot of A road and town driving, about 45 miles a day.

You're probably looking at around 30mpg I reckon

Haggle some money off and get the cam belt and oil pump pick up pipe replaced asap.
