Title: Mixing clocks
Post by: Mcwill on 14 February 2014, 22:12
Hi guys, just got myself some 120mph clocks of ebay with 54k on them in mint condition for £12.50
Thing is I have 160mph ones but the circuit board on the back has lots of bodge jobs on them.
Can I just swap the 120mph dial for the 160mph one.
Also the 160mph clocks have the 8000rpm counter and the 120s have 7000rpm, will that matter.

Thanks guys

hi there was a few different kinds of clocks on the mk2s. if they both have vdo printed on the face above the mileage and if they both have 1540 printed above the trip reset button then they should swap over fine. not sure if the motometer and vdos swap over but check out what you have first anyway.

My 8v came with 160mph clocks, which are 16v fitment. Being a run out model, VW fitted what ever they got hold of. As they were Motometer, the mfa went  after a few years and I replaced them with 120 mph VDO's. So my guess would be you could swop the speedo

my 87 gti is on 236k and the mfa is still working perfect. so its probably not an issue with the manufacturer. just one of those things.

Looking at the pics of the ones I've got coming there doesn't seem to be the same plug in part for the water temp? But it is the single plug one :undecided:

I had an '88 model first time round and that had Motometers in and gave no trouble. The trouble started to appear after '89 ish when they went to single plug clocks from two plug ( I think it was that way round). It would be interesting to know if any one is still on Motos of that later era. There used to be someone that travelled around the VW garages repairing the faulty units. At that time you paid an arm and a leg for replacement clocks as there weren't as many available second hand. Happy days

I have 1990 8v 120 vdo clocks. What 160 clocks are available to me?

Are they double or single pin?

I haven't had a look at the back but I think as it's the later clocks they are single plug

Yeah mine were 120mph mph vdo and I just swapped for 160mph vdo ones, both single plug.

Got the clocks today and don't think I can use them :undecided:
Although they are single pin there isn't the plug in part for the water temp at the bak of them?

May just keep for spares.

im pretty sure that is the clocks out of a late mk2 driver. there no sign of the port for the mfa vacuum pipe. could you put up a pic of the face of the clocks?

Yeah they are, dose that mean they won't go in a gti? The front is the same as a gti.

There's no visible vacuum sensor bolted onto the back, so as you've already stated they're not GTI clocks.

You'll lose all the MFA functions etc and presumably reduce the resale value if you put them in. There must be a better option that preserves the MFA?

My clocks still work it's just the bulb mfa is a bit iffy, the main circuit board wires on that bit have broke so need a bit of a repair doing on them.
