Title: bad day car broken :-(
Post by: justalex81 on 09 February 2014, 18:45
I have a 1.9tdi sport on a 55 plate. Driving along when i get a slight thud and a loss of power. manage to coast it to a layby and call AA. he manages to start it and it idles but very rough. blue smoke out the exhaust. He removes the dipstick and it spits oil all over him!!!

So my guess is piston rings but i don't know an awful lot about this engine. Hoping it isn't so. Any thoughts guys?

Was this with engine running? Crank case breather all gunked up?

How many miles has it done.

115k miles. serviced every 7k since i owned it.

a blocked breather wouldn't cause blue smoke out the exhaust would it???

i thought blue smoke = oil in the explosive chamber

Turbo?

Well blue smoke is oil being burnt, I would start be getting a compression test carried out, if within spec then you can rule out an engine problem.

You could have an injector or fuel pump issue, it could be burning excess fuel.

if the breather pipe is so gunked up it's shut then the crankcase does not have a possibility to vent - typically this leads to overpressure....

could also just be that it has a lot of oil in intercooler...

would check into that before ripping turbo out.

will do pressure test first. i hope it isn't piston or rings but i can't see what else could cause all this to happen at once.

it was the turbo in the end. impeller snapped in half!
