Title: Couple of Questions about ATP & MDI
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 08 February 2014, 16:26
Right,

Firstly, I've had to spec my GTD with ATP as I wanted the heated front screen. How exactly does it work? Is it a cable from your phone to a port near the centre arm rest? VW doesn't seem to make it very clear, unless i'm missing something?

Secondly, I understand my car will come with the MDI port as VW have sorted the issue with ATP option deleting the MDI. My question is will the car come supplied with a cable or will I have to buy one separately? If it does come with a cable can I specify an iPhone5 cable with the dealer or whoever?

Thanks in advance

Hiya,

right.....

The Advanced Telephone Kit works by you putting you phone inside the special inductive pocket which is located in the centre armrest, you will also get a USB charge point in there too, just use your normal iPhone/Android cable. The port is only for power and doesn't link to anything else in the car.

The MDI port is located in the front cubby hole ahead of the gear knob, you should get a iPhone MDI cable with the car, some have been lucky to get both the iPhone 4 30-pin cable and the iPhone 5 lightening cable, others didn't get one and some like myself managed to get the dealership to swap my blue collar cable for the red one.

If you want album art and the ability to play iTunes movie try and get the red MDI iPhone 4 cable, the iPhone 5 has a green collar and worths just like the red one.

Hope that helps.

So when you say play iTunes movie do you mean I can watch movies on the composition screen?

Excellent, thanks very much for clearing this up. When I speak to my dealer again I'll shall ask if it could be supplied with a green collar cable for my iPhone 5 (as a freebie of course!)

Hi,

The heated screen and APT work really well. I am totally impressed.  The screen comes on automatically when needed, as well as coming on when you select the windscreen max button on the climate controls.  You will not be disappointed

I thought video playback was only possible with the Nav Pro?

I have discover nav and the green lightening lead, but no joy. It can see a video folder, but claims there re no playable files in it.

Does the ATP make any difference to playback?

Anyone know if you can play video from the USB connector with the Nav Pro?

Yeah i'll be nice one of my pet hates is a fogged windscreen. A shame you have to spec ATP with the screen though.

True but the screen does attenuate the signal.  My remote control for the parking barrier will not work if I am facing it, but will if beside one of the side windows

Well, I called my dealer today and he said the car will come equipped from the factory with 2 MDI cables; one for iPhone 5 and one for the old 30 pin style connector. He said that all GTI/GTD/GT models are now supplied with the two cables from factory.(?!?!)

I asked about the Apple leads and was also told that the car will come with *both* the old and new connectors. My car was BW3.

I took delivery of my GTD last week, with ATP and discovery nav pro, and it doesn't come with cables anymore. You can use any android/ apple cables and they just work. Also the USB socket in the ATP armrest box does connect to the stereo and allows full music control and artwork.  On the navigation it shows two USB ports being available. Hope that helps, not sure when they changed it, but it works really well.

Well thats pants for us who already have ATP, my USB socked in the armrest only provides power to my iPhone, doesnt do anything else.

That is pants, though as they seem to be coming like that now, maybe there is an updated part that can be retrofitted, though I guess it could be a difficult job depending on how the cables are routed.  It really should have always worked this way, maybe if enough people complain they will do something about fixing the previous versions.

I Have to say though, I use the sd card for my music anyway as I can't be bothered to get my phone out of my pocket most times (only got ATP as I wanted the climate screen).

I think that's better now then without the cable. Less cluttering! As for the USB in the armrest, that's a bonus but should've really been standard from day 1
