So my golf was standing for a couple of years but I just got her back on the road today.
Passed MOT, drove find from nuneaton to coventry, then Cov back to Birmingham.
When I got back to Brum I parked up at work, took it out of gear then released the clutch but it was still in gear and jolted forwards. Didn't think anything of it, went shopping and got back home no problems.
Just went to start it up again and it just won't select reverse gear.
I push down and the actual gearstick goes into place but when I bring the clutch up the car lurches forwards.
So it's like it's selecting first instead of reverse, even though I'm pushing the stick down and guiding it into the spot where reverse could be.
Completely gutted, spent last few quid getting her back on the road and this happens on the first day :(
Any ideas what it could be? I've completely lost any knowledge of cars now!

Sounds like the ball & cup at bottom of gearstick that went.
Cheap and handy enough fixed but you need to remove centre section of exhaust as its accessed from underneath

OK thanks guys. Cheap to fix but a ball ache by the sounds of it! I don't have any tools or jacks at the house I'm at.
How long do you think this would take?

about 30min - 1hr tops if you take it to a garage (doesnt need to be a specialist garage either!)
