Title: Bam engine

A potential lucky find might be on the cards in my local area. I know with many of the 20vt the engine mounts are the same but the bam engine is much newer. Are the engine mounts still fitted in the same way and similar work load to a standard 20vt conversion? The cam belt went so probably some bent valves but I'm in no rush and wouldn't mind refurbish the engine in my own time.

What is the main difference between the BAM and the other 20vt engine types over than turbo.  Seeing at how cheaper the other engines are would it be beneficial to just pick up the k04 turbo of this tt along with injectors and go and buy a cheaper engine?

Well if you can get a BAM it would be my choice, 225bhp as standard and will remap to around 260bhp, to get a 150bhp to that power will be a lot of work and expensive.

if you was going to do that you might as well get an 150bhp agu and replace that with an k04 the ports are bigger on an agu and its cable throttle rather than fly by wire. The difference between the 150 and 180 is the ko3 turbo is fitted to the 150 and the ko3s is fitted to the 180 slightly bigger turbo on the 180.

BAM is no better than the AUM hardware wise.

Yes is has a k04 and can map to 265-270bhp with the right mapping....however, if your really into your VW's you will see that the BAM has 19mm grudgen pins, a lower CR, small port head etc.

AGU is the one to go for.  20mm pins, Large port head etc.  You need to combine the 2 if you want a good conversion.  BAM Management is the same as AUM....so no worries there.  Wideband is brilliant...same with exhaust gas probes to keep a eye on things instead of ECU models.

AGU hardware, Me7.5 management, exhaust probes, wideband is where its at tuning a 1.8T combined with a strong good flowing engine and power can be on tap

A BAM has 20mm pins. All k04-02x engines are equipped with 20mm pins (APY, AMK, BAM, BFV, APX) Along with some other k03/k03s variants (AGU, ARZ, AYP) to name a few.

All k04 engines have a .5 lower CR. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Me7.5 management is the best version to have due to having wideband and egt control as said.

The agu's large port head doesn't really net any noticeable gains below the 300bhp mark. Many companies including JP@JNL racing will advise you to go with a ported small port head as it is a better design, the throat is almost too big on an agu.

Really useful stuff thanks. For the amount of hassle it would be I'm just gunna rebuild a 2.0L 8v and make it look pretty for the mean time. A 20vt would knock a couple of grand off my lancia fund.
