Title: Oil change at 6k
Post by: mullermn on 03 February 2014, 18:38
Hi,

As of yesterday my GTI has started giving me a countdown to an oil change. I'm currently at 1700 miles to go ('or 285 days' - optimistic!) with 4500 on the clock so I presume it's aiming for about 6000.

I'm surprised I've not seen any other mention of this at all on the forum - I presume others have had the same thing?

Thanks,
Andy

I'm at over 6300 miles with no sign of an oil change due as of yet. As expected to be honest.

How hard have you been driving it?  I think it adjusts the service intervals depending on how you've driven it.

To be honest it is mainly motorway driving. But when i get an opportunity i do drive it hard, usually for around 10 minutes at a time on country roads.

I didn't go above 4k for the 1st 1000 miles either.

I've just come back from a 1,300 mile round trip to Switzerland which was basically all motorway driving at 80mph. Aside from that I do a lot of normal stop start commuting and I've only really driven 'for fun' one afternoon so far.

Does anyone know what factors actually affect the service interval?

Sounds anomalous to me...

All sorts of factors are included from experience of other cars. E.g. operating temperature, number of starts, ratio of cold to hot starts, integral of rpm over time etc.

Even if that's the case... reducing your service interval from 20K -> 6K sounds extreme...

I suspect that the indicator was either set incorrectly or there is some sort of fault somewhere in one of the sensors... I expect it to be the former, if I'm honest...

In the handbook somewhere there is a table that will tell you, based on one of the codes on the sticker in the front of the book, what your service interval should be...

Thanks for the info. I haven't been driving the car roughly, just normal commuting with the occasional motorway run (aside from the ski trip, obviously) so I'd be surprised if anything I've done has brought it forward that far. I'll raise it with the dealer and see what they say.

I always used to think that but apparently according to my mate who is a senior engineer in a well know car company, it simply uses the average mpg figure as this is best indiciator ultimately how hard the oil has had to work.....

In most VW's engines including the Mk7 the engine also uses built-in sensors that continuously monitor the oil quality. These sensors are included where the market has Flexible Servicing Regime available.
