Hi Guys & Girls
Its getting cold and you guessed it the heater is dodgy...but its not enough to moan at. Whats happening is that heat is comin out but not very hot. I've looked at the pipes and they all look sound.
Car is running fine, Engine and oil temp are ok.
Could it be coz i got a Piper Cross Filter, keepin engine cool?
Car is a 91 8v Digi
Any ideas cheers ;)

induction kit wouldn't make the engine run any cooler. hotter in fact. all it's doing is giving the engine more air to burn.
i've heard it's a common fault on the mk2's for the heater matrix to go which isn't very good this time of year. I had a heater cable kink on me meaning it would only adjust a very small amount. those are the only things I can think of.

my heater gets very hot instantly which is good but it cuts out later on. Wheres this heater matrix?
-
in the box in the middle behind the center console. There's a huge door that opens when you move the heater control and lets warm air in. The matrix looks like a small raidator with 2 pipes going to it from the engine side. 'the golf' (issue Oct '03) ran a step-by-step guide on how to change it. fairly simple to do :)

Check the bypass valve between the hoses going to the bulkhead, do that before looking at the matrix itself.

Hello, am having a similar problem on my Mk2 1.6.
Have managed to make it more consistent by ensuring there is no air in the coolant system. I did this by running the car with the bonnet up and coolent filler cap off until it ran hot and the fan came on. Once the fan has cut in u know the engine is up to temperature.
Ensure that it does'nt overheat by keeping water topped up. As the water circlates the system with the lid off it effectively bleeds the system of any trapped air.

Hello Chaps
Think and hoping it may be a kink in one of the heater cable link (with reference to Dizzie's post) as i have recently taken the dash out to replace a bulb in speedo....I probably didn't put it back right. Since i have did take the dash out the heater doesn't select the differen t air vents fluently.....so hoping its an easy fix
Cheers for the replys will let know what happens
cheers

fairly easy to do. just time consuming. I got a replacement cable from the local scrappy for nowt. it's blue btw. took me about 30 mins to take off a jetta and about an hour to put back on my golf. works a treat now. I was stuck with freezing cold air and have to drive to work @ 6.30am and it was a bit chilly.

I'd definately try what golfvr6 has suggested above. Its a known problem.
-
;D Whats a by-pass valve, where is it and how do you check it..sorry don't know what it is?
-
There is 2 hoses going into the bulkhead, just to the left of the expansion tank, it goes between them.
-
Hey i know exactly whats cusing this problem as i had it a month ago but have sorted it out now.
Its not the heater matrix cos i changed mine and i still got no heat.
The problem is the heater matrix by-pass valves.
I changed these and now im getting loads of heat.
-
Yep always look at the bypass valve first, a lot easier to change than the matrix!

Or just clean out the radiator system with a radiator flusher...worked for me ::)
