Title: Please recommend a stainless cat back exhaust...
Post by: general_piffle on 28 January 2014, 23:12
I like the look of the Scorpion system but they've stopped making them! This is for my MK3 GTI 16v from '94.

What's best to go for? Ideally not too loud (just a bit throaty, no headaches on long runs!) well made, full system from the cat back, and traditional twin pipes.

Your recommendations please people!

iv'e got a powerflow which cost just under £500 from cat back. You can get others for less and more but stay away from those that state stainless but in fact its only the boxes that are made from stainless and the pipes are mild steel

i think i'm right in saying that 16v and vr6 are a larger bore.

I bought a second hand scorpion cat back system for £100 that is a good system it is in good condition no leaks and it will last a long time as it is all stainless steel 2.5 inch bore sounds sporty not to loud i can still here the engine noise at higher rpm a decat would make the system louder if you wanted more sound

Is there anything wrong with your current exhaust system? If not stick with that unless yo want a bit more noise or the guarantee of a long lasting stainless steel one.  Don't expect to see any gains in performance.

One of the boxes is starting to rust through a bit (only rust I can find on the whole damn car!) so figured replacing the whole system with stainless would work well in the long run.

Yeah go for it then. Jetex would be your best bet if Scorpion are not making them for the Mk3. Miltek are quality as well as Supersprint. All are good options.

Magnex

The anni has a magnex...I am not that impressed as it needed some work to stop it fouling the tunnel (I know it's a vr6 system but from my back of my cat it's identical to the vr set up, yet it still gave me issues)

Had no problems with mine at all.
Only problem I have ever had with exhausts (until now) is the middle hanger. The rubber mounts kept perishing and allowing the exhaust to bang on the crossmember. Replaced those with powerflex ones and had no problems since! Approx 7 years ago!

Would recommend you hold out for a good second hand system. Could of easily saved a couple of hundred on my Milltek if I waited another few days!

Ill be removing the Sebring twin oval backbox and standard system from my 16v sometime soon if you're interested? I know it's not a full stainless system but still sounded quite good without been intrusive.
