Title: 8v exhaust
Post by: Mcwill on 28 January 2014, 22:26
Hi guys will the 8v exhaust be restrictive on my abf? It has no cat or centre silencer.

I would think a mk2 16v system would be better suited to the abf engine. mind you the abf is a couple of bhp and cc's up on the kr engine but that shouldn't bother it much as long as you get a decent brand of system. btw does your car have the lambda sensor wired in?

Hi bud yeah it does have the lambda sensor wired in.
Had a full stainless made up but think they just copied the 8v system that was on. Opps

Wont be that big of an issue. Youll lose a few top end bhp but will gain lower end torque. The new system is probably less restrictive than orig 8v system anyhow. Unless its a track car youll never notice the top end loss unless you drive around around on the redline all day!

Unlikely the main system will make a gnat's cock of difference.  What WILL make a difference is a tubular manifold from the likes of TSR.

For reference, DannyP's ABF Syncro made over 170bhp with a home-brew 4-branch on it and the rest was simply OEM Syncro (as mine is).

By my recent experience avoid Jetex like the plague!

Really in two minds about getting TSR manifold as its a lot of money, will it really make a difference? My current manifold is cracked so do need a replacement.
Is there any cheaper alternatives out there?
Also how hard is it to fit? Looks a tight squeeze  :undecided:

but gambit if it was low end torque he was after an agg would have done him .

maybe danny's car would have made 180 bhp with a bigger exhaust

macwill I get the feeling you want as much power as possible out of your abf. so I would defo have a decent 2 1/4 inch system at the very least. I don't see why vw would upgrade the exhaust from the mk2 8v to the 16v if there was no gain to be had. as for the manifold you may gain a few bhp and your engine should run a little smoother but the cost of them is ridiculous.

Yeah I think your rite bud I would love it to go like hot snot, I think it's just because people don't think it will be that fast, but I have to draw a line somewhere, so I'm going to do manifold and g60 gearbox with balanced and lightend fly wheel and remap and up rated mounts and that will do. Well for now

Got my new/second hand stainless manifold ordered

I assume you ordered one for an abf? Otherwise youll have fitment issues against the tunnel but you can get round this by tilting the engine back a bit or bashing the tunnel

The new manifold turned up today

So the pipe diameter on it is 2.5" and as said before my exhaust is 2" so my question is can I cut the existing pipe off at the rear silencer and weld a 2.5" on? Or would the silencers need changing.

Get a decat section made up (bolts to 3 bolt flange) and then has a 2" end to mate with your existing centre section. Sorted :)

Thing is bud I already paid a good whack to get this system made up  live and learn.
So was wanting to do it on the cheap.
I can buy a metre length of stainless, 90degree bend,3bolt flange and gasket all for under £50.

This is how it is at the mo.

So I was thinking where the top arrow is is where the new manifold should finish and where the bottom arrow is I could just grind off and fit new 2.5" bore.
Dose that look doable.

Buy something like this then just get a joiner between your existing centre pipe.

Been down to the see the guy that made my exhaust today and he can make me up a exhaust piece that will have a flexy on it and a reducer from 2.5" to 2"
Looking at about £50 dint think that was to bad.
