Hi guys,
Just want to confirm I am buying the right engine oil for my new GTD. In the manual it states "VW 50700". When going to the castrol edge (recommended by VW) website the one that matches this code is 5W30. I presume this is correct? I know mixing oils is not good so want to get it right!
Cheers,

Castrol Edge 5w-30 is fine..

Thanks for your response! :-)

fyi.... all 507.00 (and 504.00) oils are 5w30. (btw there is no oil that only has 507.00, they all also have 504.00)
you can hence use (and mix) all 507.00 oils... does not matter who is the oil manufacturer (mobil, castrol, fuchs, even halfords own brand).
obviously not all 5w30 oils are 507.00 / 504.00.... to paraphrase it so that no questions are left: all thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs....
-
Who makes Halfords own brand oil? And is it any good?
-
only use oil that has the vag approval. halfrauds own brand doesn't or didn't do don't use it.
-
halfords own brand says it fulfills requirements of 504/507.00....
gotta read carefully these day :(
no idea who makes halfrauds oil though...
just bought 25l of mobil 1 0w40 diesel from atu.de website for 50€ including shipping (yep... 2€ ~= 1.70£ per litre) ... shame it's not very low ash.... so can't use in my car. but won't go to waste (will be used in my brothers c4 1.4 petrol and my mom's corolla's 1.4 d4d)

halfords never used to have the VW thumbs up but if they have now then it's another option. doesn't really matter who makes it as long as it has the VW accreditation.

Would there be an issue topping up the GTD with some Castrol Edge professional 0w30? The low oil light pinged and I've only got this stuff to hand.

I was in Asda Longbenton (Newcastle) today and they had lots of Castrol oils reduced, including a 4L of Castrol Edge 5W40 fully synthetic down from £38 to £30.

This will not have 504/507 approval, which is the only oil allowed for diesels (DPF). If the 0w30 is ACEA C3 you're probably OK using it (unless it is old LL2 spec, i.e. VW 503.00 spec), though would check what manual says, think it says that you may use 0.5l other oil if LL3 oils are not available. Otherwise you'd theoretically void warranty (VW may check in case you have any engine trouble).

Yeah cheers, checked the dipstick and the oil level was in the middle between max and minimum. Went out in the car today and no error light came on, bit of a strange one.I'll pick up some correct oil just in case it does come back on.

I got a litre of the correct Castrol stuff from an ebay seller - ten quid inc delivery....

I had a low engine oil light today and popped into Shell. None of their 5w30 oil has VW 507 listed on the back anymore. It used to as that is what I bought previously. Their 0w30 is rated for VW 507 now though.
