Title: iPhone 5 lightning cable - picked one up today
Post by: pauliem on 23 January 2014, 15:22
Got an iPhone 5 lightning to MDI connector today, it is OK but not as good as I had hoped:

(http://i854.photobucket.com/albums/ab108/pauliem78/Mobile%20Uploads/1725FE4C-5305-415E-B7F2-D2889266D805_zpszuzqxm3k.jpg) (http://s854.photobucket.com/user/pauliem78/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1725FE4C-5305-415E-B7F2-D2889266D805_zpszuzqxm3k.jpg.html)

It functions perfectly well, works much better than my previous cable.  Quite a bit more responsive and shows album art etc.

But the connector end is so damn big! It is bigger than the previous cable even with the adapter in width and it is not a really tidy solution.

Perhaps I was setting my expectations too high.

It's ugly isn't it, and the cable is pretty stiff. I've got an iPod nano connected, and was thinking of attaching the nano to the sidewall of the MDI box in the storage area with a velcro disc, freeing up a little more space in there. Not sure it'll make a lot of difference though.

Green?

I'm pretty sure the one that came with my car is white. Bloody VW!

Do you have discover nav, or nav pro? If the former, can you play video from your phone?

I dont have any Nav system - just the standard system with Dynaudio - already tried playing a video and although the audio was transferred to the car, nothing else was.

So if I have a standard stereo system and want album art etc to work on my display with my iPhone 5 could someone tell me which cable to buy as I'm now officially totally confused by this. How much am I looking at?

I own a green collar cable which works as expected. I believe the green collar is specific to the MK7 Golf! The dealer price is £70 but have a look on ebay to get a deal...

Mk7gti;

Intriguing to hear that your lead has full functionality, especially including charging with the 5s as the parts dept at my dealer inform me that the VW lead ( part no; 5N0035554F ) does not include charging for the 5s!

Mine definitely charges my phone ask the dealer to let you try it before you buy...

It does charge the 5S, that is what I have - a 64Gb 5s.

The cable is short and a bit awkward and actually not worth even close to the £68 I paid for it, not because it does not function well, but I think the design could be a lot better. The MDI Saga and connectivity in the Mk7 is the most disappointing part of the MK7 for me.

I think I am just going to go back to charging the iPhone using my Belkin USB Charger and play music from the SD Card and not the phone.

The Belkin charger I have is a much neater solution and allows you to close up the flap on the dash.

Plus it means I can charge other things using the standard USB port.

Thanks for clarifying chaps,

Pauliem; where is your standard 'USB' located?

I have an Irish spec car so had to add the MDI as an extra but I cannot locate any extra USB connection!

I don't have any USB connection either, that is why I bought the Belkin that I linked to.  Don't really like having to buy this sort of stuff for a new car, but it's not terrible either.

eBay is where I got my green collar from. £30 with free postage. Ugly connector, but works like a dream

sorry for asking a really dumb question but in getting a cable to connect to the media in slot in front of the gear change, what does that do that i don't already have i.e. bluetooth connection for music and other media on my iphone 5?

thanks

Pretty much the same but charges the phone also, and think someone mentioned it brings up album art etc..

Also think the quality is significantly better when plugged in over bluetooth.
