Title: Loud fan noise on cold start
Post by: Mellls on 23 January 2014, 13:42
Kicking myself for taking my Mk4 to an independent garage to have exhaust warning light problems dealt with...
Anyway, £300 down already, they've changed plugs and a coil it seemed ok when I collected it.  Today, when I started her up there was a really loud fan noise, I thought it was the climate control on full blast, turned it off and realised it was coming from the engine!!!  No warning lights, turned her off started up again and the fan noise was gone.  2 hours later, started her up, same thing.

The other thing I noticed was that she seems to be getting up to temperature a lot quicker than the usual 7-8 miles, was up to temperature after 2 miles.

I've searched through the boards guys, I can't find anything but I'm not sure what to put in the search... "fan noise" doesn't come up with anything.

Anybody got any idea, not sure if I want to take it back to the independent garage, especially after they said they didn't change my leads because they're hard to get too

Fans usually kick in on start up for around 20 seconds.

Really?... I've had the car 6 months and it's never done it before

They charged you £300 to change the plugs and a coil?!!

That's a 5 minute job and parts are less than £40...

Maybe they saw me coming!!!  He did say when I called that it was one of two coil things (I'm blonde), one was £30 the other was £160 and it was the £160 part that he fitted. Code reader charge of £30 and labour to walk round and round in circles I guess .... That's why I don't want to take it back over this new fan noise, which earlier post said was normal?

I wouldn't be going back there in a hurry.

What year is your car? If it's a later one it might be the secondary air pump making the noise

Fook me they had you good. Mine also gets up temp within 2-3 miles. Start to worry if it goes over 90 temp.

When the fans kick in on start up does the car idle higher then normal too??

I would agree with dom if yours has a secondary air pump it will be this you can hear its part of pre heating for the emissions and catalytic convertor etc

Yes, the car idles higher on start up, about x12 then it drops down to x8 where it usually idles when the fan goes off, is that normal then?

yes that's normal don't worry especially with the lower temps this time of year it is just an enriched fuel mixture for initial start up then as the engine warms the idle will drop back to where it should be

Mmmm yes, thought you guys might have something to say about that, thing is, I've still got the Mk3, had her 12 years, will have to get some shots of my newbie.  I must say, it looks nothing like the mk3 when I lift the bonnet... I'm completely lost, and I can't see through to road!!

OK, I've ebay searched the secondary air pump, I know what you're talking about now, I presume that they would have had to remove this to do the work.

Should it have a seal to hold it in place as it's sitting loose within the hole?
I guess it would be safe to start it up then hold it to see if it makes a difference.

It is quite loud, peeps turned their heads in the car park earlier, it attracted attention.

I've not noticed the sound of any fan on start up before, is it possible it wasn't working and now it is it needs a clean?... (sounds similar to my fish tank pump when it needs a clean out and the impellors got stuck?)

You're a great help guys!! ty

I just removed mine along with all the associated pipework. The pump itself is pretty easy to get to but a bit of a bugger to remove because its hard to access the bolts for the bracket.

If you're slightly handy with the spanners I'd buy a blanking plate and ditch the whole system including pump, there are loads of guides online showing how to do it.

Can you ask them what exactly they replaced for £160? And maybe get a receipt? Personally I wouldn't let that go
