Not sure if this belongs here not being GTI but I know one member (Jimble) who will appreciate it

dire review looks like i and better cancel that order

Is it just me that thinks that the front of the R doesn't look as distinguishable as the GTI. If the you forget the twin DRL's for a minute the front just looks very plain. Perhaps it's just the pictures that aren't doing it justice. Think I'll need to see one in the flesh.
Terrific review mind you
-
I really love that Lapis Blue and the 4 pipes at the back! However, one thing I'm not 100% sure on is looking at the front leading edge of the rear bumper (part that forms the bottom of the rear wheel arch) when viewing the car from the front. Just looks a bit sharp IMO
No denying, the carbon leather interior looks stunning and I may well look to upgrade once I've enjoyed a couple of years in the GTI!

I saw a new Audi S3 this morning, very pedestrian, only noticed it was an S3 due to the 4 tailpipes. It might be the image there, but that front bumper on the R looks a little on the chunky side
-
Hmmmmm, I just loved the mk6 R as it had real presence and was quite raw. It was too expensive for me and I'd never justify the costs for the amount of use I'd have for the 4wd.
The mk7 R makes a compelling case for itself price wise above the GTI and comes with a decent spec as standard BUT it's a car I want to love but just can't.
Too clinical maybe? I'm not the target audience anyway. I read the R forum regularly and the guys that buy R's are in a different class to me so it's a GTI for me (phew! glad I don't have regrets less than 12 months from placing my GTI order!!!) and I also have a huge soft spot for the new Leon Cupra SC 280.
The S3 does nothing for me at all. It's an Audi and all Audis just look like Audis and I don't play Golf or drive a company car or have a minge so don't think I'm their target audience either.
Nice enough review. Noted that they launched it on snow (literally) like they did with the mk6 R so as to show a bit of added value for the 4wd!
Hats off to the car and I'm sure its dynamics will be very well suited to the permanently wet UK roads. Shame the torque is the same as the GTI though.
-
I thought the torque was 380nm for the Golf R and 350nm for the GTi PP?
I agree with the negative comments posted so far, will read the review later tonight.
I am guessing usual understeering nature due to the Haldex?

Maybe it was the same torque as the GTD then? Dunno!
-
It will be a great car but I do agree from the front I'd does look like a standard s trim golf. It would look so much better in white
-
Yep, I agree.
If this is the finished article, it does look a little bland from the front. the GTi and GTD do seem to have nicer front bumper.

I know we have same torque as the new cupra 280, which makes me wonder whose running what turbo but I'm sure we will see soon enough

Polo looks fruity.....potentially more fun than the golf
-
WANT that Polo! I am going to order one of those as soon as possible! That will be the fastest car ever. Imagine the hustle you could get on that down a B road..................... Ace!

Lol
I like the RS model styling but the other Audis seem less distinguishable from each other than VW's. But this is more a case for all of the VAG range with this generations increased platform sharing. Is there any reason to buy the Audi or VW anymore?
The MK6 R had a similar front end to the cooking models but it looked great in Rising Blue. The MK6 R is rare and also commands a premium on the used market.
The addition of a proper LSD on the MK7 has perhaps swayed some people towards GTI PP?
-
It's a bit plain apart from the 4 pipes at the back. That could be a good thing, a real wolf in sheeps clothing when you see it in your rear view mirror, before it flashes past you. The GTI/GTD look a lot more special than the rest of the Golf range both inside and out. There doesn't seem to be that same jump up in R over GTI, in fact it looks a little less special. Maybe something to make it stand out like a dull LED blue glow to the grille stripe which is painted red on the GTI?

Love the look of the Golf R especially in three door form, looks good from this angle.
0-60 in 4.9

I genuinely think it's the twin DRL's that make it look more aggressive. If the GTI had those I think it would look better than the R
-
Does it have front fog lights ?

Does it have front fog lights ?
Nope
I took prefer the GTi looks over the Golf R, but the Golf R isn't a bad looking car
Both have their own market segments and customer bases.

Pedantry: It's actually 0-62 in 4.9, so it's even quicker than that.
The PP GTI was 0-62 in 6.4 and 0-60 in 6.2 if I recall, so the R might be 0-60 in 4.7 - 4.8?

Where's the ACC/ front assist/ city braking radar unit we all know and love?

Good point - if it doesn't have it will be even more expensive to insure compared to the GTI
-
awful front bumper

UK cars are getting ACC, this pic is a euro car but it'll look the same obviously:

I actually really like the look of it. I bet it will be a brilliant all weather car. Hopefully it will resist understeer more than the last car, but understeer seems to be the default for most AWD hot\sports cars.
-
Minus the 'Golf R' wording on the door I like the look of it in the pic

Minus the Golf R writing on the door the pic in the quote above actually looks quite good. I have been unsure about it up till now, even the pics in the Autocar review looked a bit bland and safe in styling terms. I am sure it will be a car that has looks which will change your opinion dependent on the angle or lighting of the time you are looking at it.
It's definitely a Marmite car in regards to it's looks, you'll either love it or hate.
