Title: Lost your keys?-Got quoted £25 the first time but £75 the second by VW dealer.:(
Post by: Jasikasisback on 21 January 2014, 12:26
Not sure if you guys knew this or not, but will pass on this information as I have misplaced my key at home somewhere and cannot find it. VW dealership charges £25 for a new key and that will be made in a maximum of 10 days. I think that is quite reasonable considering new keys cost much more.
This is cheaper than the Timpsons near me so this is one case where the dealer is cheaper than others.
I read through the posts here and people mentioned higher costs so thought I would pass that along.

FYI.

Which key is this? Just the standard one?
If your car has immobilizer don't forget it may need recoding.

Still quite a good price.

Nothing compared to how much a keyless one for my mk7 would be....

I think you'll find that the price is for key only.To program it is around £75 from VW.I do'nt think a VW dealer will ever be cheaper than someone else unless they are having a clearout or are going bust lol.

Timpsons say :-

Our original keys are exactly the same as the car dealer has, the big benefit having Timpson do your keys is they are on average 20% cheaper and can offer a more efficient programming service than the dealer.

Called them again and yes this time they said it would cost £75 for a replacement key. It no longer takes 7-10 days and they would do it right there and then...so sorry for the misinformation as I was misinformed when I first called them. Bummer...I will turn everything upside down in my flat and try to find my key...

Ok I have not found my keys and will give up after tomorrow and bite the bullet. If anyone knows of a service that will do it cheaper than the dealer then please post. The dealer near me wants £75 and will do it in a day (at least that is what they said over the phone the second time)

Argue the point you were told £25 - that's not on. Typical vw

I phoned again and got quoted £25 for the key and £30 to get it programmed.

It will be an expensive lesson for me misplacing this key, which will become a door key if I ever happen to find it.

I was hoping someone on here would be able to do it all for cheaper...guess that is a niche that someone on here can get into if it is profitable.

Was looking to see if a early ECU along with changing the locks and ignition barrel would be cheaper but a couple of people who are breaking cars want more than it costs to get the key from the dealer.

If anyone knows of a private locksmith who can do it cheaper please post on here.

:)

if you have the login code for the ecu (it's on a small black tag that came with the keys) then someone with vcds can program the key for you (literally a 5min job).... then all you need to get is the key (obviously get it cut).

unfortunately i dont have this..i'd appreciate it if you could take a picture so when buying in the future i will know what it looks like.:). I'd wish it was written in the service schedule that came with the car. I'll just get the key done next week. I've looked for the key for 6 days now and no luck..

you can get a new pin from VW as well.... it's 7 digits and will only work for a certain day.
if anyone with vcds lives near you might be worth checking if they can get into ecu and immobiliser, then ask for the 7 digit pin from vw.

that pin should not be too expensive to obtain from them..

I don't think the dealer will give out the information but I can try. As for the key I will call them and see how much they will charge for just having it cut. Thanks for finding the key online.

cutting key if you supply - most key cutting places can do mk3 keys!
5£ not a penny more! so 12£ for a new key :)

as for the 7 digit code, yes vw will give it to you. just show up with car paperwork (and car if you can!), should not charge charge you over the odds for this very simple task of getting a key generated on a website!

programming it to your immobiliser with vcds + code takes 5 minutes - and that includes booting laptop and connecting it all up.

if you lived anywhere near me i'd do it for you

photo of the keytag below... maybe it's with the service book (if you have that?)

nope I do not have the code...I have found a boot sticker with a bunch of numbers on it, but not sure if one of them is the key code or not...I managed to get into the car using a key from another vw...but cannot unlock the steering column as the key wont turn in the ignition...but at least I can get into the car now..

I know about taking the door handle apart and reading the key code...so now the car can be towed to the dealer and they can read the key code from the door handle and do the rest I imagine...they have already ordered a key using the VIN number so I hope it matches the ignition barrel. who knows if in 15 years they have changed the ignition barrel on the car or not....:)...the previous owner stated that she has never changed the keys while she owned it so there may be hope that the original key will fit...:)

I was wondering if there is any way to unlock the steering column without the key....

This would help me get it to the dealer easier...at least for the AA...:)

just tell AA that you don't have key and they need to put front wheels on a fork. not gonna be an issue to get column unlocked then :)

vw don't need the key if you ordered it by VIN, they can request PIN needed for coding from their system (it scans the ID from immobiliser and requests a code online automatically).
