Hi All, i've been lurking in the VCDS pages for a while, and was starting to get frustrated a bit with joining it all together, and was a bit bored :) - so i have created a very basic wiki page to try and keep track of them.
Now i could have waited a bit longer, but i think the site is usable! (Will soon find out!). Lots of tidying up to do, and lots of functionality to add. My aim is to add as much info about the VCDS/Rosstech/VAG-COM stuff as i can.
Specifically it holds coding/adaptation records, but i will expand to hold more.
yes there is a forum, but i don't want to take a way from here in any respect, and therefore mainly to be used to collect support and help from people :)
I have only added 3 or 4 of the current posts as an example, but wanted the site to be tested, so left loads for other people to upload! (HINT HINT!) :)
Each link has a credit/weblink etc post, so linking back to either the forum or profile picture where required :)
Very much hoping this post doesnt go against any forum rules? (Once my link exchange is up, and i get time to sort domain names out, i will link back through :) ) - anyway seen other peoples web links here, hehe :)
Without further ado - the unbranded - un-doimain-named link is: - http://vcds.greg-roberts.com/ (http://vcds.greg-roberts.com/)
Please feel free to swear at me, hate it :) - but at least be productive when critical :)
So much more to add - and well, getting tired and need a ciggy :) (And yes, image upload isnt working on the vcds entry page, but that'll soon be figured out, if the registration form works!) :P
-
Super idea this fella. Tip my cap for the effort involved.
Shame it couldn't be integrated into the forum somehow (mods)??
-
Hi - I started something similar over on http://golf7vcds.moonfruit.com (http://golf7vcds.moonfruit.com) a few weeks ago, after giving up on the idea of a wikipage - which is what I was trying to do in the first place!
More than happy to help out and transfer the contact over (along with references) to your wiki, it's not something that one person can tackle alone and a wiki is definitely more appropriate for the task at hand!
I presume you're needing to approve registrations such that only certain members can modify/ add tweaks? Don't want random untested things being added!
Good work.

Hehe already thought of that, and well, will speak to the mods, but will see the interest, if they can utilize openid or similar, theres no reason why the accounts here won't work there and visa versa. :)
Thank you ! :)

Hey Jive, i'm so sorry, i didn't see your post! Really not wanting to tread on toes etc - but more then happy to work with you on it :) And will always need help, so happy to hand over the keys to bits! :)
Good question, spent most of tonight getting this done, so permissions may be a bit out, need to check it myself later :) - at the moment the forum is normal, and you have to be registered to post, (Email registration authentication on register).
Will be interesting to see who can edit what :P - permissions are a pain, but should be easy to fix if i got it wrong :)
What i think should work well, is the filter / search tool. In theory when you browse them, it splits them into categories, but i can customize it quite extensively.
-
Here is a quick screeny of the sorted / filter etc... - (Bit of css tidying up needed, but hopefully viewable ) :)
The below shot means i need to do some work sorting out spaces / new lines etc...

Forgot to add, just seen yours! I like it!
As soon as i get the image upload working (few ajax/CSS3 issues), images and uploads will be needed :) - also, as mentioned earlier, any help etc would be great! :) - Ideas as well, lots of ideas!!

Wow wow this looks wicked

Thankyou!!!
(I better go add a bugs section hehe!)

No problem at all, the more the merrier. I was only grabbing all the info I could, clarifying where necessary, and then pooling this in one central location, no fancy search tool! I'll happily dedicate some time to helping you out when I can.
If you're interested, I even went so far as buying golf7vcds.co.uk, it's parked at the minute as I didn't get around to finding hosting service, can use this if you want?
Will email tomorrow to begin helping you out.

Brilliant work guys
-
I can either sticky this thread (or the links in it) or move it to the maintenance thread? We could do without too many stickies though as it annoys a few folk.
-
Happy to go with your recommendation Jimble :) (Also, any idea if Mr dev owner person would be interested in using openID to join logins etc? - just thinking, as if so i could just annex the site)...
ANyway - can discuss that if it actually works! :)
Fixed the display, so bullet points etc now happilly work :)
Added a bugs section, now ciggy, bed and a 5am start to goto london, oh the yayness!

Give JV a pm with regards the openID cos i've got no idea what your on about?! Tbh about 50% of this thread has been gibberish to me!! :D
-
Haha. Will do :)
Away from the delights of my golf and on a cold smelly train to london :( bahhhhh...
-
noobmonkey, think what you and Andy (jivemonkey) - have done is brilliant. You monkey boys related by the way.......wait a minute, wow...is Monkeyhanger your dad
Keep up the good work and feel free to use any of the images and text that I posted at the beginning of my VCDS thread if you find them useful.
-
Thanks soot :) very appreciated :)
Ooooo... daddy!!!! How did I not spot that! :)
-
Come to think of it, there does appear to be a fairly unusual proportion of members' names relating to monkeys..
Anyway, cheers Andrew, I tried to use as many photos as I could on my initial setup and will ensure to get these transferred over as it's great to see these mods in action. Hopefully with myself and noob at the helm we can get a great resource for the community up and running soon!
That does't mean you can keep playing around with various bits and bobs though!
-
Too much monkeying around on this site for my tastes
Expect dad (Monkeyhanger) to be along soon to tell me off !
-
Hmmmm no dad! ... typical... bet he is out farting about in his car :)
On a separate note ;) thank you to jive(again) for adding more stuff! Yay!
I'm screwing around with templates and sorting the file uploads out this week. New feature requests and bugs lists also hoping to appear soon.
:)

Awesome work guys. I've got a cable coming over from China and hope to use your info in the next couple of days. Might even be able to contribute too!
-
Superb! Lots on here and other forums to copy across. Enabled comments on the posts too :) so getting there :) the more the merrier :)
currently only mk7 golfs targeted but will see how it goes for other similars. Easy to add :)

Careful with the cable Kyle..is it a genuine Ross-Tech one? Someone mentioned on here that MQB platform is very picky with regards to interface, so hope you don't end up with an expensive USB plug!

kyle I've got a genuine cable you could have used instead of buying the Chinese copy.
-
good points well made!
-
Right, a few style and function updates - the site is a bit clearer, and has the ability to add and view entries. I've simplified it for now, and will add functionality/filters etc as and when needed.

4 people registered :) - wohooo, and getting there with adding the VCDS entries. Still lots to do, but work in progress and all that :)
-
Great idea.
Registered.
-
Thanks P3asa. Very appreciated :)
As i said, all input welcome, tis a community thing. (And yes Jive, i'll give you more power soon!) - i wish there were more hours in the day!!!

Haha! I'm no power hungry who*re, so don't worry! I'm more than happy to put the time in to this, it's a worthwhile cause. Definitely not enough hours in the day, have made a couple of edits today but haven't added one yet, simply not good enough!!
Going to try tonight, but my new camera's arrived so I may be tied up...
Need time to actually play around with VCDS to find out some more things as well.
I just thought, is it worth using the first post in the thread by Andrew (sootchucker) in an 'About' section as I did? I found this info very useful when first getting into the world of VCDS.
-
Yup v good point!
Might also fire an email to Rosstech and see if they mind me linking to them etc.
Will do some article posts rather then forum posts for some parts. (like "What is VCDS" and "What do i need to get involved" etc etc.)
-
Looking good.
Now that I've got my GTI I will properly get into VCDS. Any suggestions where to get all the necessary items and what is needed? A cable and software I'm guessing.
-
Also forgot to add, please can people send me through pictures they want to go on the top banner :) - i'll put them on a random load/rotate :)
The limits are:
580 * 100 (Max and Min Size)
Shades of Gray & White (More preferable to B&W)
Picture choice - cars are good, but VCDS / VAG-COM related please! :)
- Will add an upload form, or do a forum post :) - or post here of course :)

I got my cable from the same place as most folk on here, an authorised Ross-Tech reseller Gendan. The Micro-CAN works perfectly well if all you'll be using it for is the latest generation vehicles from the VAG group
Link: http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCMC.html (http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCMC.html)
The software itself is free, the licence is held in the cable dongle so will work whenever it's plugged in. I've used on multiple machines (my MacBook pro running VMWare and work laptop running Win7) with no problems at all.
Can be downloaded from Ross-Tech site: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.html (http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.html)

Hey Hey! And awesome!
Yes literally a cable and software.
The software is free, the cable less so ( http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/hex-usb+can.html (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/hex-usb+can.html) ). The general advice is to get a Rosstech cable. but they aint cheap. So borrow one locally if you can.
-
Thanks for the info & link.
Think I will order the cable first. Shame my current diagnostic equipment at work doesn't work with cars. If anyone has a Combine Harvester or Tractors I can soon tell you what's wrong with it, and yes tractors need diagnostic tools

Haha awesome, you might need your own forum space and entry system for those! ;)

Cheers for the offer mate. Tried my cheapo cable tonight and managed to get alarm chirp to work.
Will have more of a play tonight. Great site, cheers guys.
-
nice! :)
Thats 1 thing i want to try and do is keep an eye on cables, types etc, and if they work list them :)
-
Right, quite a few updates: (http://vcds.greg-roberts.com (http://vcds.greg-roberts.com))
Tidied up - stylesheets etc, including VCDS entry and detail display
- Decided to use the instructions/descriptions fields to add images (Sorry, but easier for now until i fix the back end)
- Added a general search, but it does search the VCDS Entries
- Added lots of Forum changes etc
- Added pictures to most of the VCDS entired that had them
- Added How to's in the forum
- Added Help page (With links to ROSS-TECH pages)
- Fixed the "Last 5 entries" at the bottom of the home page"
Still to do: (And i need help doing :) )
- Adding more changes, things like the XDS or other changes added recently (Rear lights on brake etc) all to be added :)
- Sort out image uploads in VCDS entries, but well, the description field method works...
- Order the domain name (Gonna go generic, in case it expands from the golf/MK7!) - thinking just VCDSWIKI.com or similar?
-
Just checked the site today and can't seem to find any entries?
-

Same here...
-
umm i kinda ruined it, have reset the filters... and well the entries are all back now :)
Sorry, over eager.
There is an option to add more than just MK7 golfs now... if that helps... (hmm maybe not on this forum lol)
-
Bit of feedback on the dimming indicators article it's not detailed enough mate. There are several other Leuchte2SL VLB10-Dimmwert and it doesn't indicate which one to change to 35.
Any ideas?
-
Heya, not sure what ya mean, as (Well i've not tried it though!)
- Go to [09] Central Electronics
Go to Security Access and enter 31347
Go to adaptation channels and set the following (they're quite far down the list):
"Leuchte2SL VLB10-Lichtfunktion G 2" to "Blinken links aktiv (beide Phasen)"
"Leuchte2SL VLB10-Dimmwert" to 35
"Leuchte2SL VLB10-Dimming Direction GH 2" to "minimize"
"Leuchte3SL VRB21-Lichtfunktion G 3" to "Blinken rechts aktiv (beide Phasen)"
"Leuchte3SL VRB21-Dimmwert GH 3 to 35"
"Leuchte3SL VRB21-Dimming Direction GH 3" to "minimize"
-
When it tells you to change the option to 35 there are lots of other VLB-10 Dimmwert options (with different !letters at the end). Unlike the other steps, there is no indication which value you need to change to 35.
Other than that loving the site.

Ahhh ok!, Well they were all copied across, so may not have been checked yet :) - Off out - so if not checked by jive or equivalent will take a look tomorrow :)
I think quality of the data is always going to be questionable, as some people will never post all details etc. Hopefully the rest of can keep updating and adding correct information as we go :)
-
My bad, missed a bit out. Corrected now!
-
Cheers jive.
I'll happily add some Leon mk3 entries if you're interested?
-
Yes please! More the merrier :)
Leon MK3 added to the drop down :)
-
You're welcome, did you manage to get it all working okay? I'm thinking of lowering the dimming level to a bit lower.
Please do, the more we get on the site the better, even more so if they're tried and tested!
-
Not been back out with the vcds but I'll have a go tomorrow mate.
All fairly straight forward. One thing I did notice hough that when I was increasing my DRL brightness mine was already at 51 compared to the 26 the wiki said it'd be at by default.

Ah interesting, was that for increasing the DRL brightness for sidelights/ low beam etc? Surprised VW set these different...wondering if your car's special?

Yeah, now I'm wondering if I've changed the wrong option haha.

The Site has had a bit of an overhaul! :) - http://vcds.greg-roberts.com/
Bit tidier and quite a few more functions etc. Still a big todo list, and JiveMonkey is being awesome as per usual :)
We are up to 13 members, and have opened up to any car in the MQB platform range.
The site search now searches the entries. (Still working on a decent image upload
and the quality of some of the posts (21!) needs a bit of looking at! - but meh, i'm still tinkering :P
No response from ross tech , not surprising though! :P
-
edit - lol got a response from them ...
Thanks for the links but based on the information available in your e-mail, I cannot find you in our customer records. What is the Serial Number on the About screen in VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) on your PC? What does ALL of the writing say on the part that plugs into the car?
If you purchased your system from one of our authorized distributors, please register for tech support here (it's free):
http://www.ross-tech.com/vca/hex-com-reg.php
If you obtained VCDS in some other way, please give us details so that we can determine what's necessary to get you registered.
Regards,
Andy
Meh - think he missed the point.... oh well :P (And anyway, borrowed cable)
-
Hi Peeps,
Big updates since you all last visited:
- Live chat available on site (for registered people),
- vcds entries are a bit tidier (still not perfect!)
- MQB platform cars all included.
- forums and help....
- SSL / HTTPS:// now available
Oh and Jivemonkey, the legend he is ;)
Still to come:
- A map allowing you to register your services, a cable, support, etc...
so either http://vcds.greg-roberts.com or https://vcds.greg-roberts.com
-
Sweet. Fantastic effort :-)
-
Brilliant, excellent work :)
-
Good work
There are a few I wouldn't mind doing when I get mine
-
Hi guys,
Very keen to activate the reartail lights with DRLs on, but excuse my stupidness here...but how the hell do you access VCDS. I presume you need to hook a laptop up to your computer and have some software? Cheers
-
Heya, yup that's it.
The official cables are £200+ but theres most likely someone on here near you who could loan/help :)
The software is a simple download (as the licence is held within the cable :) )
links to both on the vcds wiki page (under help)
-

Great, thanks for your help, i will have a nose. On Amazon they are going for like £40.00, are these legit?

If it looks too good to be true....... ;)
They will be knock offs..
-
i would assume not (legit):)
There is a VCDS forum, under the "Garage" in here, and a few people use the ebay cables. There is even a kit you can get and build the cable yourself :p
Really hard to tell with ebay cables etc, but looks like some do work! :) Will be a bit of a gamble, but pretty sure others here have done it :P Might find a few bits don't work or it is all ok :P
-
Hmmm, may ask about in the "garage" and see if anyone has bought one online. For the sake of 40quid instead of £200+ worth a try. Cheers
-

not worth a try!
you're supporting product pirates who use a cracked version of vcds. you will not get support from ross-tech and you can't update the software. plus you don't know who built cable and how... 99% of the ebay and amazon cables that retail for less than 80% of the rrp come from china.... fake chips, cheap components, sh!t solder,.... do you really wanna connect that to your 20-30k car??
the cables you can build yourself are normally for the older k-line models (i.e. mk3 and mk4 golfs and other vag equivalents). i built one myself for use on my mk3 with a kit from germany.
-
right, back on track!!
https://vcds.greg-roberts.com/
Has had a well... large overhaul... Ok well i focused a bit too much on the style, but at least i can control the form now! - so the entry screen looks much better!
Working on the list and details view now :)
Also had a lovely response from JV (Which reminds me, i need to reply!) - and there may be ways to make life simpler ... but will work on that.
So.. new style... some new functions being added... anything to make adding the entries easier, is better! :)
-
Nice fresh look.
-
thanks p3easa, having a difficult descision, as i could make it more tablet / phone friendly... but i like the wide look on a pc :P (Or i could just code it! :P hehehe) - oh well :)
Having fun with the site!
-
I prefer proper PC layout of the site (not just saying that cos my ex got tablet in split up)...
hate what most sites do now that go crazy on 'elderly folks telephone button' touch tiles.
btw, is there yet a list for login codes for different control modules... so far the only one that I widely find is the one for central electrics....
-
Thats a really good point....
Currently the codes are in the entries that need them. (for example - https://vcds.greg-roberts.com/view-entries/details/1/10 - as security access is required)
But as there aren't many i might that them to help pages and link :) (If we know them all?!)
