Hi guys. Any one else with xenons find the dipped beam pretty high? Is that normal? I keep getting flashed!
-
They are self leveling.
We get flashed as the xenons are significantly brighter than traditional headlights.
I now enjoy blinding oncoming BMW drivers whilst they blind me lol
-
Make sure you've got them set to left hand traffic, they can be adjusted for driving on the continent so stands a chance they're set wrong and your blinding on coming traffic. :nerd:
-
I only get flashed by other drivers when my lights are dirty... Including that time when an old fella in front of me flagged me down and asked why I kept flashing my lights at him
-
Yeah I did check the left/right setting and it was correct. I think it just needs re-calibrating as I honestly think it's too high. In dipped mode it easily shines up and over the height of most cars and so pretty blinding for oncoming drivers. I'll take it in for them to look at. I know they can be calibrated as my bros car needed it. They may be self levelling but only to a datum set by the garage.
-
This sounds very familiar, and I'm sure there was another chap on here who thought he too was getting flashed a more usual amount of times. I can't find the thread at the moment, but sure it was this forum.
Anyway, he went to the dealer and they were indeed too high. They re-calibrated them and he was good to go. I'm fairly sure mine only reach 1.5 meters or so when facing the garage door at 5 meters or so away. Certainly shouldn't be going over cars, I'd get it checked ASAP.
If you have a similar surface you can park in front of, try uploading vid of your self levelling dance and I can do the same if it'll help confirm your suspicions.
-
Yeah, that sounds wrong. Mine point very distinctly at the road and are probably just part way up the car in front or even not hitting it at all at normal A road following distances.
I still get the odd flash - I've started just letting oncoming drivers get a glimpse of the light before dipping them so that they realise they are actually dipped, otherwise I kept getting people shining their lights in my face.
-
you would have thought with the increasing number of cars with xenons people would have started getting used to them by now
I flash back to let them see what full beam is really like on my current car!

Ditto. Was about to say that's exactly what I do, they don't know what hit em'!

Interesting....
Mine seem to be the other way - that is too low
They dont seem to shine as far as the MK6 did by quite a few meters
Its like I concentrate on the road just after where the lights get to.
Very odd

Thanks for all your replies. I am going to the dealership tomorrow to see if they can have a look at it.

Another GTD with a very low cutoff here
Mine seem to be a similar height to other cars when shining on nearby objects, but the range on dipped beam is poor. Dangerous, even.
Here are a few comparison shots between my GTD (Bi-Xenon Projectors) and my wife's Fiesta (Halogen Projectors):
Fiesta dipped beam range:

GTD beam pattern:

As you can see, I don't think the beam patterns are that different (if anything, the Fiesta's looks better, with more "upturn" at the left to illuminate the LHS roadside), but I think the dipped beam range on the fiesta is better.
What do you think? Do I need VW to look at them?
-
Haven't really got a reference myself like you have. You can definitely see that the GTD beam is so much whiter and more uniform across the top of the horizontal beam from left to right. The only way to see a lot further is to have the beam considerably higher, and then you'll be dazzling people. I think the Xenons are more about brighter and more uniform lighting across their beam range rather than being intense up close and fading over distance like the halogens do. Your driveway is lit up so much more with the GTD, and the reflection from the garage is so much more intense.
-
Yes I agree, but the shot of the woods showing the range shows the fiesta lights up more of the path etc
Fiesta is brand new, so *should* be aligned correctly.
Weird

Hi guys. Went to the dealership and had my lights recalibtared. They were slightly high but not by much! They hardly look any different so still look high. I'll just put up with getting flashed now....at least I can see where I'm going and it's supposedly legal.
Gamcqui: I would go to the dealership and get your lights checked. They look a lot lower than mine and I've just had mine sorted so yours must be out.
