Title: engine swap
Post by: dannyd126 on 20 January 2014, 13:05
Quick question.

Will a 1.8 20vt engine fit straight into a mk4 gti which has a 1.8 non turbo engine in it?

Yes it will bolt in but a lot of parts will need changing.

Paint us a picture buddy what year/engine code is the 20vt and not sure but thought all the n/a ones were arz (please correct me if I'm wrong) but I think the simplest one would be the agu because it's a simple engine
The parts I'd think you need are
Ecu, key, ignition barrel and transponder, engine loom, downpipe/whole exhaust, intercooler, gearbox and driveshafts. + a few more I'm sure I have missed
On another note where are you based

Im based in Yeovil. I have a whole golf with an AGU engine in it. But the interior and bodywork are beyond economical repair. And ive been offered a non turbo gti. So it makes more sense to me financially to just put my engine in the non turbo shell. So.I have literally every part of a 1.8 20vt

You can use the same ignition barrel but you need the transponder ring.

Agu should be a simple enough swap, especially if you have donor car.

I would check to see if the have same tank pump fitted, other than that and the downpipe, it should be plug an play as there's no extra wiring

if i need the transponder ring, does that mean i will need the key from the 1.8t?

That was my initial thought but all you really need is the transponder chip from the key so you can keep the key and the barrel and all the locks.
If you were a bit closer id have given you a hand as I'm planning on buying a tidier golf to put my setup into be it another turbo or a no turbo shell so I could get an idea of the workload

Any ideas if I can do it without the 1.8t key?

Yes you'd just need someone to program in the keys to suit. AGU is very simple to do

Have to crack on with this at the weekend. What's the list of all the parts I need to change?

Right then you should have everything if you have a whole donor car the way I see it is strip the non turbo down. Remove the engine and loom gearbox driveshafts exhaust and ecu then do the same with the turbo and then put all the turbo stuff back in the non turbo.
Then find a tuner who will defeat the immobiliser on the ecu and that should be ur lot buddy you shouldn't have to buy anything but I would invest in some new engine mounts and possibly a clutch (as this would be the easiest time to do it) exhaust manifold gasket and anything else you bump into whilst doing the swap
