Hi Guys, After an afternoon of "working" on my project mk2 8v (1989)
I noticed that most of the relays on the right and side of the fusebox are rusted into the box by their contact pins.
I've removed all of the relays to clean em up, however, one did not come out in one piece as it was rusted in so badly, in fact, one of the contact pins broke off and stayed inside the slot on the fusebox. It is not sticking out at all so wouldn't be able to remove it with tweezers/pliers as can't get on it from the front, also its rusted in there so it will be stuck fast too.
So does anyone have a magical, easy solution to getting the pin out so that I can put a new relay in. Or is it a case of taking the fusebox totally out of the car - can it be opended up when out of the car??
Otherwise, how much petrol do I need to set the magic machine alight, that'll teach it.. :)

I picked up a mk3 fusebox from scrappy for £7 for mine. Might be an easier solution for you
-
Is it an easy job to change it over?
-
The fuse box is the same. If you take the three screws out of the cover under the wheel you can see it all. There are clips on either side of the box which when undone allows the box to flip down and be supported on the wires. You can take your time and label/photo everything to put them in the new box. They can be a bit of a mare to get out sometimes. Instillation is the reverse of removal.

I messed about changing one plug at a time but then run out if room and just unplugged everything. The beauty is the plugs will only go in the correct slot with offset pegs on them so no chance of getting it wrong
-
Ive got the lower dash trim panel off already, the fusebox pulls away towards me and there are white clips on either side which I think I need to unclip, how can you get to the plus on the back of the fuse box?
-
Pull the clips out and lift fusebox off its hangers then you ll be able to spin the whole thing over
-
so, once I've removed the fusebox from the car, is there a chance I can get to the back of the slot the pin is stuck in? does it split in half as such or is it a sealed unit.
I don't mind buying a replacement, but I'd rather remove the pin, clean the box up and put it back if that is possible, no sense wasting money if I don't need too
What are ya thoughts?

Even if it was possible to get it in half to push the relay pin back through your still missing a relay and would have most likely have to have removed all the plugs. At the scrappy grab both the relay and the fusebox.
-
I would just change it as going by your first post it sounds pretty corroded. is your car a ce1 or ce2 model? ce1 will have hazard light switch beside rear fog light switch. ce2 its on steering column cowl.
-
It's ce1 electrics, there are no mk2 golfs with any bits left on them at the yards near me, this will need to be an eBay job!
-
Managed to get the box of the bracket and have a look behind, it's a bit of a mess as there's been bodging action before, some old wiring can be removed but it'll wait till I get a go in daylight, almost every fuse has corrosion at the terminals, I can see a source of water ingress but will be surprised if its the only one, needs to all come out so I can clean up the area and seal up the leaking bilkhead!
-
I would pull the wiring plugs out of the back of fusebox and check them for corrosion. if they are bad I would seriously consider swapping the loom and fusebox to ce2.
-
You are most likely right, but I am hoping to keep this vehicle as standard as possible, I have replaced a lot of CE 1 stuff including speedo, wiper stalks etc and I'm looking to have the car finished and running this summer if poss (should have been last summer!)
Gonna have to stick to CE1
-
maybe you could strip down and clean out fusebox. would do it very carefully though and take plenty photos as you go.
-
If its got to the point of corroding a relay in place like that it needs
A, a full strip down and clean
Or
2, replacing
I would go for option 2. U will never clean it all up and mk2 electric need all the help they can get
A ce1 fuse box can be obtained easily enough. Get it restored out of the car then swap out from one straight into the other.
-
Not sure if this helps or not:

Agreed I've taken apart a rusty green one and you know what?.... I binned it there are just some things you should get a replacement especially if its the nerve center of the car

Well....Photo's of my CE 1 fusebox being removed plus the rusty article ready for the bin
