By now I must surely be annoying people, so apologies if that's the case. I'm back with more braking related queries.
Firstly, been reading a lot of workshop manuals, and it seems that when the term "bolt on upgrade" is put before "brake kit", it seems quite literal. From people's experience, provided all bolts, lines and tools are at hand, is it simply a case of remove old - assembly is reversal of removal (with new, bigger bits)? I panic about brakes as they're a little bit important, you know?
Secondly, I've researched brands and am aware that ATE are essentially the OE manufacturer of brakes for Volkswagen, but what's the brands worth giving my money over to for performance parts? There's many out there, listed across many websites, but the ones I seem to gravitate towards are Black Diamond as they're cheap but seem to be uprated versions of OEM parts.
Maybe a weekend soon I'll get my new brakes on and STFU on here asking questions... Just maybe...
-
I sell V-Maxx and AP big brake kits and both are simply unbolt the old and rebolt on the new (all bolts, hoses, carriers etc are all included in the kits)
The big break kits are not cheap though so if you want to just uprate your discs and pads for performance version's then it's the same as just changing them for std spec one's
(b.t.w I sell Mintex - Delphi and Brake engineering as o.e replacements or EBC & Zimmermann as my performance one's, If you want a quote on any kind of set up let me know  I have some listed on my website http://oemandmore.co.uk/braking-150-c.asp (http://oemandmore.co.uk/braking-150-c.asp) for the MK5 although that part of my site is not really comprehensive as yet)
-
Please don't mention AP BBK to me as I desire them, even if I just have a caliper to put on my shelf. I already have my big brakes sat in my room, but I think they'll be better on the car. It's mainly the brake bleeding bit that I've never really done, need to get a good kit. But I'm pretty sure I have all the bolts and bits (the kit in question came straight of a 2012 Golf R).
Thinking of getting myself this;
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/tools/car-service-tools/brake-service-tools/brake-bleeders/?SEAVS020&0&t5_389
I have access to a 90-120PSI air compressor so seems to solve my brake bleeding concerns.
-
Personally I'd bleed the system the best you can yourself and then take it to the dealer for a brake fluid change for £59 which obviously includes a re-bleed, the only sure fire way to bleed the mk5/6 system properly is by using VCDS or the dealer VAS system to cycle the ABS pump and purge it of air and old fluid, it'll be the best £59 you'll spend on the car
-
See, I got the brake fluid done just a year ago, but I may see if they'll do a deal on just checking it and purging it of air fully. I already have VW brake fluid so they won't even need parts, just a bit of time. What does the dealer charge, about £1,000 per hour or something isn't it?
-
Brake fluid change is fixed price at £59 including fluid at all my local dealers so I'd just get them to do the lot tbh mate?
-
i ran AP 4 pot 330mm kit on my Mk6 and have to admit they were just spot but you are looking at high consumables, now they are off i really miss them

Always got to try haggling for a deal, there's no such thing as a fixed price. ;)

If I go to stage two tuning, I'll potentially swap my front brakes for some AP Racing ones. They're highly rated so that's the way I'd go.
-
After taking my rear R32 calipers apart, it's become apparent I'll need new seals and also a tiny metal bracket that sits in the carrier and helps seat the pads.
Does anyone have a good place to get seal kits from? Found a website that's pretty comprehensive but maybe someone knows a better one?

Also discovered that GSF can provide Brembo pads and discs, which unless someone can tell me why I shouldn't trust this brand, I'll be upgrading all round to their pads and discs.

Nothing wrong with brembo but which set up? they do performance and o.e replacement one's (gsf are the latter), I also sell brembo and delphi as my top line brakes (pm me your PR number and I can do a quote if you want?)

I've had good experiences with Brembo OE replacement discs in the past and have in fact just got a set of the Audi TTs 340x30 front discs for my R32 front brake setup, Brembo HC discs with the UV coated bells for £102 delivered for a pair via Opie oils in the sale
No experience with the 'regular' Brembo pads though, although I have heard good reports of the HP Sport fast road pads..
-
312mm Brembo discs pair from me are £110 delivered (these are the discs with painted bells or £85 without painted bells) and brembo pads are £37 (all prices are all inclusive)
oh and I still have my Delphi disc and pad set's on offer http://oemandmore.co.uk/delphi-front-brake-discs-and-pads-312mm-925-p.asp (http://oemandmore.co.uk/delphi-front-brake-discs-and-pads-312mm-925-p.asp) at £90

At the moment, I'm broke, but I would be looking to at least fit Brembo performance pads both front and read, standard replacement rear discs (310x22mm) and performace front discs (345x30mm). The rear discs I got with my used R32 setup look OK but really rusty so may just swap them for new as I'll of rebuilt the rear callipers so pointless running fresh callipers and pads with old discs.

I am having trouble finding some performance 345mm front discs by brembo! I use tec-doc hich links to brembo direct and they have no listing at that size in performance discs
I can do sport pads front £120 and rear £107 and std discs 345mm f £152 310mm r £102
-
I shall certainly bare those prices in mind! Got to wait till March though as all money has gone already for February, and got to pay for the other bits Ineed for my rear callipers!

The only 'performance' discs that Brembo do as an OE fitment (other than replacement 2 piece stuff) is the 'max' range, sadly it's not available in either the gti 312 or r32 345 fitment
If you are dead set on Brembo (their regular stuff doesn't IMO offer any improvement over OE dealer discs) then consider the 'premium' range which come with a higher carbon content to the steel and painted bells and edges to protect against corrosion and some come with better cooling vanes thanks to the Brembo PVT utilisation
In your case Mike I'd definitely consider the 340x30 Audi TTS front disc, lighter than the 345 by nearly 2kg a side, MUCH better and bigger cooling vanes (PVT) and does away with the 2mm lip on the disc edge that the 345 disc gets when worn, cheaper too as I've just got a pair of Brembo 'premiums' for £102 delivered
-
Beddie are you forgetting the sport range?
http://www.brembo.com/en/car/Racing/Street-products/Pages/Discs.aspx (http://www.brembo.com/en/car/Racing/Street-products/Pages/Discs.aspx)
312mm are part FD172000 (1 piece slotted)

I was mate, forgot about those completely!
Would be a good upgrade path for those wanting the look of drilled with OE quality, I'm not too keen on drilled as they always seem to crack when used on track unless your talking mega £s forged with the holes from the start stuff
As an aside, can you source Brembo 08.A202.11 mate? Rear 282x12 premium plain rotors?

A pair of 08.A202.11 are showing as £71 delivered (and are the painted type)

Cheers mate! After a rear pair to match the painted front ones when I get round to putting the R32 brakes back on

So would the fact the discs are 5mm smaller in diameter be OK to use with stock Golf R callipers? They sound like my bag, being lighter by 2kg. And being cheaper is always a winner.
Also, if I used the 340x30mm, would these also work with AP Racing 4-piston callipers? Just thinking about future upgrades.
-
The 340mm disc will work fine with the Golf R/R32/S3 caliper, as Radius not diameter is king in braking terms you are only 'losing' 2.5mm in effect
Neither the 345 or 340 will work with AP 4 pot calipers, but tbh it would be a travesty to hang APs over heavy single piece discs..
Audi R8 4 pot rear calipers with the correct brackets will work with the 345mm discs, but you'll need on average a 10mm spacer if you keep your standard wheels
-
Ah, OK then. Think for now I may just go for the OE discs for the rear with standard Brembo pads, up front will upgrade from OE discs to Brembo performance and pads at a later stage. I'm only running 266BHP so no need for serious braking power just yet. Not until I hit the track days anyway...
