Hi,
Reading some of the early Gti reviews it seems the roof of the car is Aluminium? Is this true or was it something only on the developmental cars?
Cheers

I've not heard that... so I don't know...
Easy way to tell... Get a magnet... if it sticks to the roof panel then it is steel, if not then it is not steel and most likely aluminium (although it could be any non-ferrous or even non-metallic or composite)... Be careful not to scratch the paint...

As far as i'm aware, the news was "Are working on an MK7 shell with an aluminium and/or carbon fibre roof" - by that, i read for a future R/Gti style model, and not in the current. - Good test above though :)

Hello Ian, yes the Mk7 Gti does have an aluminium roof I feel fairly confident in saying, when I was constantly researching before ordering our car I read that VW had developed a new welding technique so they could use an aluminium roof on the Gti to save weight without affecting structural integrity. Another example of forward thinking and development from the German machine!

Its certainly a very thin metal as its easy to compress into it when cleaning the roof.
-
I noticed the noise with big rain drops is strange and loud enough. It could be aluminum, but only the aforementioned test will reveal the reality.

I have just realised why the roof has such smooth looking lines...I see no aerials on the pictures I have seen?
I am guessing if you choose a nav option it must have one of some description..but none sat nag models, is it some sort of internal one?

Correct mate. Sat nav adds a shark fin aerial, I believe the standard one is in the windscreen but don't quote me on that.

I thought the Alu roof was a consideration when the MK7 was in development, due to aforementioned new welding techniques, but never came to fruition.
Easy way to find out whether it is steel or Alu - does a magnet stick to the roof or not? (edit: Just seen Corgi's post)

Steel roof confirmed by Millenium Falcon fridge magnet/bottle opener.

I've the basic composite media system on my GTD with the fin :nerd:

The advanced telephone preparation adds the fin too. The radio antenna is hidden in the rear window (the heating lines that demise the rear window isn't just for heating).

Slightly off topic (but still roof related) but does where the centre of the roof meets the left and right hand side, is there a 'seam' or is it a smooth transition from one to the other?
A close up photo would be very much appreciated.
TIA

That would explain my fin..
I like it.
