Title: Blowing only cold air
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 14 January 2014, 18:25
The blower from today will only blow cold air. A few weeks ago some foam had blown through and was behind the direction unit things. Also had a massive condensation problem arise which caused loads of moisture and ice on the inside of the windows. With no hot air I had to drive to work at 5:30 down the m3 with my head out the window freezing to death. Obviously with no hot air ever it won't clear after getting up to temp. Are these problems linked and what's the solution?

Does your car have by pass valves fitted onto the 2 pipes that come of the back of the engine, and go through the bulkhead? these are troublesome, and can be discarded... reverting the car back to how it would have left the factory

Yes it does have this valve. Another symptom I have remembered is that occasionally the temp light would flash signifying low coolant (coolant is fine) or overheating which it's not. It will flash from first ignition till i get there without turning off but often if I switch it on and off it will go off and stay off. I had considered an air lock also so will try to flush that out now.

If you have bits of foam blowing out then it has perished and parted from the control flaps. Mine needs doing but keep putting it off as its a bit of a pain to do

There was a fantastic guide to sorting this out kicking around on the forum, well worth a search. Full walk through with pictures...

you can get at the main flap if you take out your centre console and remove the panel on the heater box. well that was on my 87 gti. not sure if later ones were different but worth a look.

I have the same problem on my '89 16v, I get a little bit of heat but barely any. I have fully flushed the cooling system. I also get the temperature light flashing at seemingly random times, yet I have no problems with overheating or low coolant. Does anyone have the link to the thread mentioned above?

Is there any chance it could be an air lock?

you cant just get an airlock. it sealed system. so it would have been airlocked & blowing cold air since the day you last topped up the expansion bottle. and if it is an airlock you can just burp it out by squeezing the bottom rad hose with the cap off when up to temp

cut out the bypass valves

then be prepared for the heater matrix to let go at some point if it is still an original mk2 item. and trust me you'll know when it goes, as your car will resemble a sauna with the steam blowing out of every vent!

they are not difficult to change - just annoying, fiddly and time consuming so book yourself a sat afternoon at it

I had heat again today. Having to top the coolant up everyday as it's draining over night. That's only just started happening the last 2 days (after the initial ice over and no heat). Luckily it's got stains on the drive so it's an external leak somewhere, just need to find out where.

Well just run the car up to temp and watch where its coming from :)

It's a slight leak though, maybe 200ml over a few hours. I saw the coolant bottle dripping when I filled it up again. Hoping its that. Raining so heavily as well makes it hard to see when and water is coming from.

If your getting moisture int he car, then the heater matrix has probably split alreay, and the blower is carrying the moisture into the cabin.

you need to swap your heater matrix and remove the bypass valves. I did mine on my 3rd mk2 only a month ago and the difference is amazing, nice warm air and after repairing the flaps, the air blows through stronger too. Its a sod of a job tho!

I had the same issue, my water pump had collapsed, hence the warning light.

Aluminium tape on the heater vents with it all still in car worked for me.

Need to pull the central vents out, centre console and then the t shirt shaped bit that's behind the middle vents (sorry haven't a clue what it's called lol) and then the flaps are accessible

First I would bin those valves. 22mm copper pipe to delete these.
Next you need to fit a blue coolant cap if you haven't got this already and be sure that the O ring is fitted to the cap.

Had this on many mk2's where the black cap would not release pressure and cause pipes to blow/ weak corroded core plugs to leak.

Take the radiator out and give it a good inspection. A small weep is enough to cause this exact problem
Bleed the system and add a very strong mix of coolant.

When bleeding mk2's I always disconnect the water flow exit pipe from the matrix and wait for a nice flow of water to come out. Then connect the pipe and do the same with the radiator. Speeds things up.

Ohh yes I know  A very good mate of mine

IIRC the metal pipe that joins to the matrix -leave that pipe on and remove other.

Go find a Golf3 1.8 or 2.0 in the scrapyard and rob the pipes that run to the heater matrix in the bulkhead.  Replace your pipes with these and avoid 22mm copper inserts in your system.

No heat is usually the bloody valves seizing up.  I drove from Brighton to Bristol one January in a Syncro with this issue.  A car with NO heat is a hateful thing!

Wicked, I've got a leak atm so when that's fixed I'll bleeding this way.

Straight pipes are available from VW Heritage.
