Not that I'm surprised (I've never had a good factory fit sat nav), but the discover nav (the basic one) seems disappointing.
Unless I'm mistaken, there seems to be no option to search by postcode - the way that everyone uses a sat nav - only town / street.
Also, the map is already out of date. Yes, I live in a new build house, but I've been here for 4 years. Why doesn't it know my road?
Anyone know if there's anyway to get it updated, or even make map corrections?

The VW website has the update file but beware they are quite big.
Edit: The link is to Navteq and the update is November 2013. It's 4.9Gb

Apparently you can also buy the updates in an SD card from the dealer

I've never been impressed with manufacturer sat navs!
However, you can download updates for your maps, there is a November update you can download then add to your SD card in the glovebox.

And you can search by postcode
its under address and then PSCD or similar

I agree I think the sat nav is a bit rubbish. Ive put 4 postcodes in for family addresses and it hasn't recognized any of them. and also the talking lady voice seems to have a bit of a stutter.

Don't the updates come free from the dealer for a period of three years or something like that?

Is that a legit VW operation, or a slightly dodgy map? Not a file format I've encountered before...

It's legit, the company is Navtec and they are linked to from the VW site.
In order to update your navigation system visit the Navteq maps website here. You can download the full set of data in one go, or choose to download in individual segments. Full instructions on how to perform the update are also available on the website.

Does anyone know what is the latest version of the Nav updates? Ive checked the sites and cant find a version number for the download.
I got my car in November and its says I have the November version - 5G0919866E 0034 ECE 2013/14. should I attempt to update? Thanks.

My old Honda Civic Sat Nav was much easier to use that the Mrk 7 GTi Standard Sat Nav. I also cannot find a Postcode search - Where is it???? Please tell me it does have one! Thank you:smiley:

Gina - VW sat-nav units don't seperate postcodes from normal addresses. So you just carry on as normal but when it prompts you to type in the address town just type AB10 1XY or whatnot and it should recognise it...
-
Just check the Navtec website here for updates, if the version number there is newer then update.
Easy as piss.... Download file from website, extract, copy to SD card... might wanna take copy of stuff that is already on the SD, then delete it.
Postcode search is easy, not sure why you're struggling so much?
(there was a bit of sarcasm towards VW there)
Tap 'New destination' -> tap the 'city/town' -> tap on bottom left where it says 'PSCD' or 'Pstcd' or something like that... it will then bring up a number pad (as continental postcodes are generally only numbers), tap the 'ABC' on bottom left, enter the 2 letters, tap '123' enter number, tap 'ABC' again to put the last characters....
Not sure why VW can't manage to get the software to start off with letters when the country is set to England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

When you press address, there is a postcode button bottom left of the screen.
Annoyingly it brings up a number keyboard first, so you then have to switch to letters - but the functionality is there.

the vw one does ;)

when i had a GTI on loan it had the normal rather than pro nav and i did not like it as in reality needed a quick session with the manual due to not twigging the postcode thing but loved all the other bits of it

I meant that is starts with 'address' rather than saying 'Where do want to go - an address, lat/long co-ordinates, postcode or a point on map...
You have to choose address before you can input a postcode.. ie; VW consider a postcode to be part of an address rather than a stand alone destination. Sorry for not explaining myself...

Thank you muchly everyone, will give this a go. I've had the car nearly two months, but not yet looked at the manual - I haven't even begun to think about the cruise control!
