I've recently purchased a used starter and want to test the solenoid with a miltimeter. I've looked on youtube but they only have a video for an old Ford soleoind..
I would assume the three terminals are battery at 12 o'clock,
terminal 50 ignition switch at 3 o'clock
and the motor terminal to the starter at 6 o'clock.
In the Ford video he puts the multimeter to Ohms and then he grounds the negative to the solenoid housing(ground) and the other end to the positive (ignition switch?) and gets a value of approximately 3.5-4 ohms. I get only about one ohm when I touch the ignition switch to the housing.
I would appreciate if anyone has a guide on how to check the solenoid/starter (off the car) and also how to take it apart and check and service the components of the solenoid/starter. This would be for the Bosch starter off the MK3 golf.
Thanks.

no multimeter needed, get some jump leads, earth onto a shiny bit of the body of the motor, positive on the exciter wire spade. If it spins then its a good motor.

so the exciter wire is number 50??

not sure, but the exciter wire on the starter motor has a small male spade connection, not a round terminal.
