Title: My first stonechip on the incredibly soft GTI's paintwork :(
Post by: Mr Savage on 11 January 2014, 22:49
So I was driving home from work the other night when a car drove past on the other side of the road. I heard the horrid sound of a stone flicking up and hitting somewhere near the drivers door. I got home, got out and saw a chip that appears to have gone straight through the clear coat at the top of the drivers door before it reaches the roof :(

The paint around it seems incredibly thin and soft....

I'm not sure what to do for the best? Do I use touch up paint and make an even bigger mess or do I take it to a company?

It's in a very unsightly place so can anyone recommend a top stone chip repair company in the midlands?

I have three of the suckers on the bonnet, one of them a real soul destroyer.

Self-repair depends on your skill and patience. If it's just the clear coat and a small chip, you can get a modelling paint brush and dab the clear coat into the cleaned chip, just proud of the surface (there will be some shrinkage as the paint dries). If the paint is a little thick to nicely apply, you can thin some down with alcohol in a bottle cap or similar and apply a few layers (thinner paint leads to more drying shrinkage as the solvents evaporate, so maybe make it a little prouder with a few more layers).

Give a week for the paint to not only harden, but cure as well and give the painted surface a hand polish with some slight abrasive polish (like Mer) until it is smooth and level with the surface. Gloss it all back up with some wax afterwards.

If the chip is tiny then a wooden toothpick may serve you as well as a modelling brush.

Or buy a Chippex kit - thats the next step up from a blob of paint..

Discovered my first chip yesterday

Will be using a modelling paint brush to apply a touch up when i have a few more. The car only has 1300 miles on it so god knows how bad it will be after more miles

I had 1 after a week - unusually, up on the top of the wing, an inch higher than the "knife" badges. The paint looked especially thin. I have another one - almost in the exact same place on the opposite wing, but this time it hasn't gone beyond the pigment layer (TR).

Has anyone had experience of these Chipex kits? Are they better than the Paints4u kits? They seem quite handy to have around. My paint is TR so none metallic and I would imagine it being much easier to blend this colour.

Well now covered 2000 miles in the gti and can honestly say although the car is fantastic the paint is the most chip prone I have ever seen.
I have been incredibly careful whilst driving behind other cars keeping a good distance and even pulled off the road while a road gritter passed however I have 7 or so chips on the bonnet, 2 large chips on the o/s wing and one in the door!!
How is everyone else finding there cars with regard to stone chips? My mk5 had less chips on it and it was 8 years old!

Yep the paint is very very thin. I think if you sneezed hard enough it would strip the paint down to the metal. The arches are pretty poor too.

A cocktail stick is great for gently applying small amounts of paint into a stone chip, very delicate.

I have 2 small chips on the bonnet and 1 larger one on the o/s door lower section, I must say I am concerned about paint thickness although it is very much a modern car issue. My last car a Civic Type R GT was also prone and ended with loads on the bonnet and front wings but to be fair it had a front end shape that was inviting problems! My golf is TR by the way. Shame we can't get a proper equivalent for the cellulose paints as this was much tougher and easier to polish and work with. :undecided:

I wonder if there is correlation between certain colours and number of paint chips - some paints go on thin because they have excellent opacity perhaps? Mine is TR and I have 3 chips in 4800 miles. The paint looks very thin.

Tornado Red also. Possibly a problem with Tornado Red?

Tornado Red is one of the most difficult colours to paint a car - apparently it requires many thin layers to stop the paint looking very "orange peely" and thicker coats change the colour dramtically (making it much darker).

I'm hoping the metallic isn't as fragile .....

Well my gti is black pearl so probably all colours are equally susceptible to chips. My chips are also down to the bare metal so can be spotted a mile away!!
What a shame the paint or lack of it lets down a brilliant car.

First chip for me :( Oryx white

First one (2 actually but very small) for me on the bonnet tonight . Oh well it was bound to happen sooner or later, 3 years later would have been preferable

I've been lucky so far... None on the metal panels anyway.
At least with white if you do get one, the undercoat / primer is white-ish too so the chip isn't too noticeable. Not so on the bumper though where it's black under the paint!

Mine is showing a bit of black underneath on the bonnet Joe

Must be quite a deep one so Craig. Bummer.
Or it could indeed be dirt/grit from the stone. Try polishing it...

Yeah but two very small chips right beside each other so shouldn't be too difficult to fill in hopefully . Famous last words

I've had a couple of small chips on the front of the bonnet, easily touched up and I now can't see them.

Either the paint is better on the mk7 compared with the mk 6 or the ACC/city braking/warning lights and sounds are helping keep a good distance from the car in front.

My mk6 needed a front bumper/ bonnet respray after the first Winter, it looked like it had had several point blank blasts from a shot gun.

So far, so good.

Noticed my first today during a wash. CSG and it's through to bare metal. Gutting as I'm super careful driving, avoiding everything I can and keeping silly distances behind things.

Hadn't even heard anything that sounded like a stone, so the paint must be super soft.
