Title: Clean Mk7s
Post by: KyleB on 11 January 2014, 12:44
Thought it would be a nice idea to show off our clean Mk7s. I got some new AutoGlym stuff for Christmas and finally got to try it out.

I use:
PH Neutral Snow Foam
AG Shampoo
AG Super Resin Polish
AG HD Wax
AG Glass Polish

My results:

Cheers mate, mine was the same. Think it'd not been washed in about 3 weeks. Stick some photos up when you're done. (They can't be any worse than my attempt)

Just washed mine too. Just a normal 2 bucket wash with G-wash over my C2V3, which is still holding up as well as day 1 - still gleaming and making crap just slide off effortlessly.

Giving great consideration to painting the hub part of the discs (as they have a bit of rust on them) and my calipers - when the warmer weather comes.Black gloss hubs (to match the wheel shadows) and red calipers or black hubs and black calipers?

I think Black Gloss with Red Calipers mate. I'm considering doing that, like you say, when the weather is better.

Surprised you used polish on a new car with its mild cutting compound? A wax would've been a better treatment, looks great though, nice job!

Eventually got round to washing mine today after 3 weeks of neglect. I usually wash her every week but not been able to recently because of man flu

Anyway I couldn't believe the amount of tar build up on the car and with pure white it really stands out badly. Fortunately the tar remover worked an absolute treat although it took me twice as long to clean. It's just a small reminder to me to make sure I keep on top of the washing otherwise it will be a bugger to maintain

Nice thread - I'll be contributing to this when I collect my TR 3-Door GTI in March. I'm a hobby detailer and I'll be keeping my car very clean!

I feel a bit useless in this thread as i'm really a noob washer, also no pictures yet.

But on Saturday i did the following:
Initial Power wash
Snowfoamed
Mitt wash (2 buckets)
Quick Power Wash
Second shampoo/Snowfoam as it was caked on (Pure White!)
Dried
Waxed
Polished off :)

God that took ages!! - but was worth it.

Don't forget the waxing you do now will just make interim washes easier. You'll feel like you spend your life keeping CW in tip top condition, but when the nice weather comes and it stays clean for a couple of days it'll be worth it! Trust me!

Yup agreed entirely... i did a quick wax before xmas, and to be fair, the tar slid off this week. (Not planning on waxing any more for a while, just wanted to clear of the tar and give it a touch up :) )

Well, I won't show you any before photos as I'm ashamed  :embarrassed: It's been over 4 weeks and 1500 miles since I last had the opportunity to clean the car, but did so yesterday. Bloody freezing (just 4°C), but I bit the bullet and gave her the full going over. As usual, it then proceeded to rain (and is forecast to all week), but hey ho.... ths is what I ended up with (taking in my work car park this morning).

Have you checked with your detailer that using tar remover wont do any damage to the sealant you have on the car , I wouldn't think it will but just in case and you need to  reapply it .

Yip asked the question at the time and was told there would be no problem. To be honest without using the tar remover I would have really been struggling to remove the marks as they weren't for budging.

Picking up my black gtd on Friday, its been seven years since I last got a brand new car so I'm looking for some advice. What sort of products will the dealership have used when washing/ preparing the car? I've seen a lot of good reviews on the sonax brilliant shine  so was wondering what I'd need to do, if anything, before applying it ? Is it just a case of a good wash then apply it  or is there something else I need to do? Cheers in advance.

Unless you have opted for the Lifeshine treatment then the dealer is just going to give the car a basic wash however you should specifically request that they do not wash it as most of them make an arse of it and your left with your new pride and joy having several swirl marks all over it.

Not sure about Sonax but the flavour of the month on here is Gtechniq C2V3 which to be fair is very good and quite easy to apply.

If you're really unlucky, it'll be a sponge wash with some fairy liquid in the water.

My local dealerships have always done a good job, but you do hear about the horror storys here. G-Techniq stuff is very good. The C2V3 sealant gives the car a very good water repellent layer and muck of all kinds (even brake dust) just wipes off effortlessly during a routine wash. It's easy to apply too.

Although GTechniq C2v3 is a very very good product, personally I think (having extensively used them both) that Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer tops it. Here is is beading on the roof of my winter car (54' plate Ford Fiesta that I'm borrowing until the GTI comes!)

(http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc481/birchyboy87/Fiesta%20SD54%20VNU/1A58A291-9CD5-41BF-8441-F485F274441C_zpsboa1kj8a.jpg) (http://s1214.photobucket.com/user/birchyboy87/media/Fiesta%20SD54%20VNU/1A58A291-9CD5-41BF-8441-F485F274441C_zpsboa1kj8a.jpg.html)

Rather than leaving a really slick finish, it leaves a (for want of a better word) 'grabby' feel to the paint, but the water behaviour is amazing! Whats more, you can use it on paint, plastic trim, glass, pretty much anything.

The dealer (as above) will just wash and dry it, dress the tyres, and hoover the car unless you've specified LifeShine. If you have specified LifeShine (I recommend you don't!) then they will slap the treatment on without properly degreasing/claying/alcohol wiping the paint and it probably won't bond properly meaning you won't get the best from it. (Not the valeters fault at all... To properly apply would take at least 4-5 hours per car and they simply don't have the time for that).

My advice, is to get the car home yourself, properly wash it (2 Bucket Method), dry it (using a plush drying towel), clay it (using a fine clay bar and lubrication solution), hand polish using an AIO (all in one) polish like Auto Finesse Tripple, then apply the Sonax BSD. Then, for maintenance, top the BSD up after every other wash (it's so easy, just like using a quick detailer - < 10 mins) and you'll be protected for many months.

Sorry for the long post, just couldn't answer with a 2 liner! If you want any advice, PM me, or ask in the detailing section on here. Waxamomo (Forum sponsor) have most of the above products (they don't sell Sonax though) and offer a great service if you need anything.

Hope this helps!
Jon

As compensation for a muck up with my order the dealer has offered to apply lifeshine and assures me that the car gas already been booked in for a full day (6hours) with the 2 head valeters. I've expressed my concern with autoglym and swirls as I was going to have it professionally detailed but he is insistent that my car will be pristine. Enough to trust?

Is there any other specific guidance I can tell him to pass onto the valeters without looking nitpicky? I'm not a detailer but I'd like for them to think I know a little bit what I'm talking about at least!

The product is actually better than it gets credit for an given they are having the 2 head valeters spend the day on it, I'd actually trust them. However, agree with the dealer that you can inspect the car in the workshop or in direct light before signing acceptance and if it's not up to your standard, they pay for a detailer to correct and protect it.

I would be asking what equipment they wash and dry the car with? A lot of the dealer valeters use a yard brush or a dirty sponge and then a drying blade and old chamois to dry it. If that's the case, I'd be saying no way. Needs to be a clean/new wash mitt using the 2 bucket method, and a plush drying towel or compressed air (touchless) to dry. It's not the product that causes the swirls, its the dirty/contaminated cloths/sponge/towels that do the damage.

Hope this helps!

I'm no expert mate but I'd wash off the snow foam before using the shampoo. Also you should polish before waxing, as the polish could remove the wax and when you wax over polish it gives it a protection layer.

Some lovely clean cars in here

Correct process would be snowfoam before you powerwash the car, it dwells better on a dry car. Foam, let it dwell while you wash the wheels, blast off, another coat of snow foam, wash with lambswool mitts, at least two mitts maybe three, blast off preferably with de-ionised water, then use an open hose on a slow foam to sheet the water off still using your filtered water. Dry off using plush drying towels, again 2 or 3 for the different areas. That's the weekly process. Occasionally polish, wax and seal to keep it all sweet.

There's keeping your car looking good and then there's OTT. De-ionised water and three mitts is a bit extreme

Hi Guys

I treated myself to £62 worth of stuff over Christmas. Having had the car a week or so I gave it a proper going over using:

- dodo juice born to be mild shampoo (then rinsed and dried)
- dodo lime prime cleanser (applied and buffed off)
- geotech c2v3 (applied and buffed off).

This lot took me 4-5 hours and was hard going...but rewarding.

I actually thought I had done a good job....until I saw Kyle B's photos

Any tips would be gladly welcomed for future. Though I realise I need to get something to help the tyres shine.

Best wishes

Si

Great job Simon, looks superb! In terms of tyre dressing - there are lots of good products depending on the finish you're after. My recommendations are:

Meguiars Endurance gel - very glossy finish and very sticky to touch, but lasts ages! A viscous liquid which should be applied on an applicator.

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/Item/metg

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/Item/mtdap

Dodo Juice Basics Tyre & Trim - Very natural Satin finish, very thin liquid (apply in a cup with a paint brush)

http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/Item/BoBTT250

Personally I prefer the basics stuff, leaves this kind of finish...

3 months in and yet another wash. Started with Auto Finesse Snow Foam, then washed with G-Techniq shampoo, then Meguiars quick detail clay and finally a coat of G-Techniq C2V3. Just wish the weather would improve so it stays cleaner for longer!!

Out of interest lew how much snow foam do you use? I use about 100ml but your picture looks a lot thicker.

Also how do you apply your iron out? Never used a product like that but imagine it'd be useful

Post by: lew321 on 18 January 2014, 16:38
With the snow foam I followed the instructions which said 300ml in a 1 litre snow foam bottle. It was rather thick  This was the first time I've used iron out. I was quite shocked how much contamination there was on the paintwork, with the car being transported by train from the factory I wanted to remove all the industrial fallout from the bodywork. It comes in a bottle and you spray it onto the whole car, leave it 10 minutes then wash off. The spray does sink though

Ah right maybe I should read the back of mine again. I'll look into that iron out because I can imagine its a worthwhile product to use. How easy do you find claying the car?

300ml of snow foam in a 1 litre bottle is much too much. I have a pump on top of my bottle and its just about 2 squirts, then a couple of a decent shampoo and top up with water. Excellent thick long dwelling foam.

Hope this helps
Jon

Auto Finesse is good stuff too:-

There was a post today on the SELOC (Lotus forum) from a guy who used some snow foam on his Lotus and it removed the dye from his room, so the Blue room is now black!

For a real wet look to the tyres, my suggestion would be Meguairs Endurance. It does feel quite sticky after application but it certainly looks wetter than the others I use (I personally prefer a more satin finish)

This is Megs Endurance on a BMW 5-Series

Unfortunatley it just started raining just when it was finished. The detailer was Further Reflections, Matt Netherwood, 07857 235722 www.further-reflections.co.uk - See Protection exterior & interior for what he did. Very very pleased with the results. He'd done the sun gun test and queried if I'd asked the dealership not to touch the paintwork. He couldn't find any swirls. I've only done 500 miles so far, but he did fetch off quite a lot of tar from the wheel arches. Excuse the brake discs, I haven't moved it for a couple of days.

Gave my car it's first clean yesterday.
First off, Snowfoamed with Valet Pro PH Neutral
Sprayed whole car with Auto Finesse Iron Out (Surprised, Very little contamination)
Washed with Autoglym shampoo and conditioner
Dried with a large Microfibre towel
Then applied one coat each of:
Jeffs Werkstat Prime
Jeffs Werkstat Jett
Jeffs Werkstat Gloss
Dressed the tyres wit Meguiars Endurance Gel
Was going to take wheels off to put a coat of Poorboys Wheel Sealant but ran out of time.
Here's the results

Hi agreen7, You won't regret changing it to Carbon Grey. I've seen a few and they look awesome in that colour. Make the red strip really stand out. I plumped for silver because it stays looking cleaner for longer and it doesn't stand out from the crowd too much.

Hi Ginagee, I had a grey one on demo and when clean it did look very good, especially when the sun caught it - it has a certain menace about it. I was keen on Silver for a similar reason as I had never seen one at a dealer or on the road only in some low res pictures. Maybe Silver of the next one as I think I am hooked!

Thanks folks. Yes when new I did spend 2 full days on it and there are still a few swirls in there, the dealer did a cracking job of inducing swirls and straight line scratches with the drying blade when they ignored my request not to wash it.  :roll eyes:

It now has 2 coats of Definitive Wax Beadology Edition wax on which gives amazing water behaviour.

Reason for ordering a red 3-Door is that I had a MK5 in the same configuration and I just loved the way TR looks when clean. Yours will look ace too Triki!

Very easy indeed actually. Simple spray on, leave to dry for 2-3 hours (bottle says don't get wet for 24 hrs) and Bob's your Uncle.

Just make sure the fabric is dry before spraying.

Thanks buddy. Yes I was disappointed to be honest. I had asked the dealer not to prep it but they ignored me and induced some nasty marks, some of which will require some wet sanding (especially on the bonnet) but overall it's not too bad!
