Title: Quicky about top mounts !
Post by: spudboy6 on 09 January 2014, 22:21
Just a quick question , I've killed another set of top mounts again ! Every 6-10 months at this rate and their the febi bilsteins from tie rod ,

Either way what I wanted to know is  I know the bearings are fine , but the actual fault lies in the runner mount its squeaking against the body where it's lifted up like they do when they go soft .

So want I was going to do is undo the top mount push the shock down because I don't have access to a spring compressor at the mo and I had my camber set not long ago on the mounts when they were new

Anyways what I can't remember is , does the nut that holds the bearing and spring down also hold the rubber mount on ? If I remember they just slip over the top don't they between the top of the shock and the body and get compressed there then the hat and other nut go on from the bay

Hope you all understand ! If not looks like I'm going down the workshop to use the spring compressor and have my camber done again :(

The bearing sits in the big rubber mount iirc, so yes it's held on by the same nut.
Why do you need to get camber done again if you use spring compressor? Just don't undo the strut at the bottom.
Changed mine with strut in situ - just undo the top nut and remove the top metal plate, then compress spring, then undo the second nut that holds the bearing and rubber mount on the strut. Then fiddle it out.

How else would you compress the spring? (Don't answer that - I know you can use the car itself as a big spring compressor ;) )

I have a bench mounted spring compressor so I normally remove  the strut and do it like that , its handy the strut sits in it makes life easier working at table height

Thanks for advise , shal get a spring compressor that's not bench mounted

If its squeaking then grease it up

Or is the rubber fcuked after 5/6 months?

The hats in the bay are sitting very high and go down when its jacked up so I presume they are dead ?

I used to get through them about every 3 months.

Running low profiles and coilovers knacker them.

Yea , anyone reviewed the powerflex ones yet either yellow or black do they last ?
Although don't powerflex warrant the bushes for life and replace them when needed ?

Powerflex make for a hard ride though.I take it you are running standard/standard type struts and not coil overs ?.

I am testing meyle hd and sachs top mounts (even though I mainly sell febi) and will report my findings (quality feel etc)

b.t.w febi do 2 types of top mounts, the cheaper one's (like tierod's) and the better vr type (pro kit) which I sell

If you go for stiff top mounts then you should consider reinforcing the turret so it doesn't bend.

Something has to give and luckily the top mounts are, but replace them and then something else will give, the metal.

Something is seriously wrong if the top mounts are only lasting a few months.  I put new Febi mounts all round on mg 16v when I installed the 40mm Eibach springs and Weitec ultra GT shortened struts about 3 years ago with plenty kf hard driving and theyre still in great condition.

not sure what kills them to be honest !

anyone used or experienced any of theese meyle HD mounts ?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400523046304?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_1055wt_932

not sure what to do as im fed up of changing them every year , the bearings never go its just the rubbers squash and cause a gap in the top hats in the bay and squeak , may take them off grease them and see what happens

That's good news then !

So looms like I should take them out and grease them by the sounds of it as they only squeak when cold ?
