Title: Colour regret
Post by: Hawaii-Five-O on 09 January 2014, 12:07
I think most would agree that colour is one of the hardest things to choose for any car.

I wrestled with my colour choice for weeks before ordering. It was between Pure White and Carbon Grey. I chose Pure White.

However, after living with the car for a few months I kinda wish I'd gone with Carbon Grey. The reason... Pure White is such a b!tch to keep looking at it's best. I wash it every week but in this weather you drive it once and it looks filthy. That gets me down.

Ironically the reason I went with PW was because people said Carbon Grey shows the dirt worst out of all the colours. How wrong I was. I think it would hide 'more' of the filth than PW.

Don't get me wrong, when washed, Pure White looks superb and it makes me smile. I just wish it hid the filth better than it does.

How are your experiences with colour?

I am going through the same thing, but can still change.

I have ordered a Red GTD, discounted white as my current car is white and yes, it gets filthy.  I think the darker colours would be just as bad though.  Having had black and metallic greys in the past, they all seem to get dirty in no time.

The best colour I have owned for looking cleanest the longest is Metallic Silver.

I had a MKV GTI in blue graphite, a rare enough colour in the MKV and it was quite similar to today's carbon grey in some lights. It looked really very smart, often stunning, when it was immaculately clean and polished on a sunny day. But if it was any way dirty, especially in the sun, it looked pretty awful! It also tended to look a bit drab on our frequent dull cloudy days.
It was very high maintenance too when it came to masking swirl marks and every little stone chip was quite visible.

I find white an absolute joy to maintain in comparison. Apart from tar / iron spots which are easy enough to remove, I find white so much easier to keep looking well.

People don't notice you in a Carbon Grey GTI unless it's spotless.

If you genuinely love your car it will always be a labour of love keeping it clean and it will get you down when it's dirty, no mater what colour.

Put it out of your mind and enjoy it

TR always looks quite clean until it is filthy. Worst thing about it is slight shade variance between bumpers and body.

Last three cars have been Carbon Grey. I wouldn't have anything else

Can't see much of the colour from behind the wheel. That's where it counts ;-)

I understand your frustration, I really do! I'm a hobbyist detailer, but I'm pretty enthusiastic about it, and I look after all the families cars etc... The hardest one to maintain and keep it looking good is my Mother-In-Laws white Range Rover Evoque. It looks stonking when it's clean but terrible when dirty!

(http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc481/birchyboy87/DDK%204W-Evoque%20Spring%202013/DSC_0099_zpsfa76a8ba.jpg) (http://s1214.photobucket.com/user/birchyboy87/media/DDK%204W-Evoque%20Spring%202013/DSC_0099_zpsfa76a8ba.jpg.html)

It was a nightmare UNTIL... I properly cleansed it using tar/iron remover/clay etc and applied a ceramic sealant on it last Jan. Now, all it needs is a quick wash and its back at its best.

These sealants do resist dirt to some degree, so it would stay cleaner for a little longer.

I'd highly recommend having one applied to make the maintenance much easier for yourself. Give me a shout if you want any help, further assistance, I'd even offer to do it for you (if you're in Cheshire you're not too far from me!)

Although I've ordered Tornado Red, white is a stunning colour and looks the business IMO.

I wouldn't worry too much man. Remember it's the worst time of the year to keep your car looking nice...wait for spring and summer and you'll love your colour choice again

I was very apprehensive about choosing pure white but almost 6 months in i can say that i am very happy with my choice. Yes the car gets dirty quite quickly but when its clean it looks the dogs nuts. I think as Birchy mentioned having a ceramic sealant on it seems to make the job of cleaning it so much easier.

My black cars in the past have driven me to despair due to the swirls but with white you just don't see them which to me is a godsend

Got my pure white and love it!

What i've realised (having owned a similar white before...) - Winter is evil for white cars, but they are so much easier to clean, it is not a pain!

The summer, you get dust and it just falls off, and therefore even easier :)

So hold fire on your decision for when the weather picks up :) - the dirt will not be as visible on the PW as it is on a black car :P  (Makes no sense i'm sure, but tis true!) :P

Pure White is great, I owned a Candy White Polo and covered 52k miles in it, no a stone chip in sight.
White paint is very strong and looks good if looked after.
I am glad I picked Pure White

Thanks for your words of encouragement chaps

Maybe using the word 'Regret' in my title was a little strong.

As I said when Pure White is clean it looks really, really nice. Kinda like a perfect plastic mould (if you know what I mean) and the fine crease lines are accentuated by the light colour.

Its just that in this weather one single drive after washing and the car looks trashed! Particularly the rear end. That's what gets me down.

Seriously though.. the whole car had a Gtechniq c2v3 sealant a few weeks after purchase. Then, in an attempt to keep the rear end clean, I waxed it as an experiment. I think it helped. We'll see when I next wash it just how easy the dirt falls off.

Maybe a I should just employ JBirchy to keep on top things

Yup the mk7 in pure white needs nappies.... serious dirty bum syndrome!!

Also the sills on the reaer doors, and rear wheel arches seem to have some dirt magnets attached.... some really dirts spots compared to the other parts of the car... (I think... .maybe the oils from passengers hands maybe? Causing more dirt to stick or..... i'm really bad at waxing/polishing and missed huge areas!) :P

Don't get me wrong, GTechniq C2v3 is a decent product but it's not the best spray sealant IMO... That award goes to Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer in my book.

I do agree with a comment above in that the state of the roads this time of year are very punishing and will make any colour look terrible within a few miles. When summer comes around and it's a little drier/roads are cleaner, it will look better for longer periods of time!

So my pure white is far from white! No regrets here...

But only dirty on the outside and certainly no finger marks on the tailgate, or clean bits of cill where people have dragged across them when climbing in.

All colours get the same amount of dirt on them, so I choose a colour on how it will look when it's at it's best during the summer. Lighter colours are far more forgiving. Even the carefullest washing techniques inflict swirlling and with lighter colours these are nowhere near as noticeable.

Very tricky subject... my Mk.6 was white and I really liked it. The current Roc is DPB and a Royal pain to keep clean. In fact you cant keep it clean is the truth.... so - the mk.7 wil be white again!

I really wanted to order carbon Grey - and I can still change at this point but something stops me. Perhaps its that its close to black and a lot of the detail blends in to the paintwprk particularly around the front of the car - whereas on white its all there and visble. Silver would have been a possibility too - but I had two silver Mk.5's and I guess thats enough!

Carbon Grey is still tempting though - despite being another £300!!!

Have a look at Limestone Grey! My second choice had I not gone for Tornado Red

Carbon Grey for me too - this is my 4th car in this colour.  The worst thing with the Mk7 so far is the lack of availability of Mud Flaps, so this car does look slightly less clean cut after bad weather.  Roll on production of some Mud Flaps VW!

No matter what colour you choose, your'll always wish you had chosen a different colour eventually. Humans naturally want what they don't have and are never happy with our own choices. I have had silver cars, blue cars and now a red car. Each colour has it's benefits and looks good in certain lights.

Enjoy what you have and don't dwell on it as your'll be changing your car in a few years anyway probably.

If it's any consolation CSG gets dirty just as quick and isn't any better at masking the dirt!

I normally prefer darker colours such as black or dark gray but ruled these out with the GTI/GTD.  There are a lot of black details on the car, especially the bumpers which you loose with a darker colour.

I chose Tornado Red, but White does look the Mutts when it's clean.

I am so in your camp. PW fantastic when clean and cool when dirty, there is almost no middle ground with PW, so they look as if you care...or don't care... Haven't washed mine for 5 weeks (500 miles a week) and still people love it!

Black for me and was my first choice even after seeing hundreds of images and reviews in red and white before ordering, even when dirty my GTD looks great, complimented really well by the alloys and trim. I did contemplate Red or White but only because that's the only colours I saw of the GTD prior to ordering. I think first colour choice in your head should be the one you pick with a golf

I love the new images of the Golf R in blue and would tempt me, suits it really well with the alloys but would probably choose black as well, more stealthy looking.

I had never been a big fan of white cars, always preferred black or dark grey, but changed my mind when I saw a white GTi in the flesh.  when we ordered the gtd my other half insisted on red, I wasn't sure and was really worried that we'd chosen the wrong colour, but I absolutely love it now

I also think dirty cars look

I would also concur that silver us by far the easiest colour to maintain and for hiding dirt, chips, scratches and dents...very forgiving.

Sadly it doesn't suit all cars and can look quite bland on some models, loved it on my mk5 GT Sport
