So I'm worried that I keep scratching the brushed aluminium strip (you know the bit that lights up) getting in and out of the car. Does anyone have an idea of how to protect it, I was thinking of like a clear film that you can put on the bumpers but not sure how it will look. What do we all think?

Simple - learn to lift ya feet in and out without catching the sill?
-
I saw my car before it had been PDI'd and there was clear plastic film over those strips. I hardly noticed it was there, so I'd imagine if you put something similar onto them again it would do the job nicely.

Ok well just bought a metre of 3M clear paint protection film for £3 Off eBay. Easier than reminding myself and every passenger I ever carry to carefully life their legs when getting out of the car
Also bought this http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=350801088511&index=1&nav=SEARCH&nid=49092297414

Lol ok well maybe it's not that but I always seem to get light scratches under the handle after a few years of ownership, this should prevent that
