well well well what can i say?i drove a 2ltr mk4 gti today as my uncle and  auntie have just come into some money so they got themselves a golf each she got a 18 auto which i have to say is very smooth and comfortable and quiet but the gti???yes it was comfy yes it looked nice and yes it drove sweet!but how slow??what a sack of dead pedal!id put my mk2 against it any time, right the way through the box it was slow and slugish.it would seem that vdub didnt quite get it right!?shame really but i still rather have a mk2 over any other model or car on the road for that matter!what do you think?
-
yeah there not praised for there performance!! 115bhp moving a seriously heavey weight about = not good!! lol, the 125 bhp 1.8 20v aint much better either, you really need 1.8t or v5 or v6 4 motion or r32 to get moving.... lol
i know what your saying about the mk2s though, have had loads, 8v's and 16v's and both would leave my 20v mk4 gti for dead and alot of other newer hot hatch cars.....
but as this is the mk4 section tis not really the place to come in knocking em really as some owners of the above mentioned models may take offence... me , i really dont care my mk4 is slow and i dont mind admitting it!! lol

-
to be honest i dont really care like you said you know its slow and im sure so does everybody else that owns one.i dont mean to offend anybody dude justr stating the obviouse!my mate got his 18 t a couple of weeks ago and if im honest its not what i expected either!evfen the r32 isnt all that alot of noise and some go but not what i expected from an engine of that size.a mate of mine had one when they first came out,he had it for 6 months then chopped it in for a leon rs now thatys what i call quick!but above all that id still rather have my mk2!
-
my mk4 wil prob feel as fast as fook when i can eventually drive again!! (broken leg at mo) so owts gotta be quicker than crutches!! lol, if it wouldnt have been for this i wouldnt have sold my oakey 16v mk2 which i only got the week before i broke me leg!! but i hate to see cars sat that being unused so i sold it
what ill get to replace it i dunno... still have the mk4 but im sure some thing juicey is next in line
-
kniterider,
There's nothing slow about my PD150! Did you forget to add that to your list of acceptable mk4's? ;-)
-
yeah sorry i forgot to add the diesel version which are... er very sharpish to say the least.....

but thats just me being a petrolhead and forgetting about how god damn quick these oil burners are these days!! lol

My Girlfriends got the 2.0 Gti and I've got the 1.8t (both 2001 cars). and I think they are both great cars. okay, the 2.0 is not as powerful as a GTI should be, but it's still quick-ish if you drive it right...and it sounds better than my 1.8.
The earlier Golf's may well be quicker, and were great cars of their time, but times change and cars get more and more weighed down as modern safety features become the norm.
You might get to 60 mph a second or two faster in your Mark 2.....but it's nice to know that I've got ABS, Traction Control and Airbags etc if it all goes pearshaped down the road.
-
I agree! I had a 2.0 GTI MK4 and I know they get criticised but mine sounded great and you could knock along quite nicely!! It sounded much better than my current 1.8T
-
you say they rip if you drive them right?what do you mean by that keep them reving like a twit and cane the arse out of them?i dont like the any other shapes apart from the mk1 and the mk2 .im not knocking the quality cos it was really sweet to drive and really comfortable just got no balls!as for the pd150!yeah man they fly same as most of the tdi's.i just expected so much more from a new car.abs and air bags mean nothing to me its all part of the fun driving on the line and like you said its just extra weight.
-
My 1.8 20v is sloowwww, but I still hold some affection for it.
Gonna get something new when my money from the house sale comes thru.  Still trying to decide what.
-
I did'nt say they 'rip' anything. I was just saying the 2.0GTi is a fairly quick motor considering the amount of kit they come with.
I know what you're saying about the earlier cars looking good, and I agree, but even those iconic shapes are beginning to look just a little dated in my opinion.
The safety of a car means alot to me, not that I really want to test the airbags.....but as I said before, it's nice to know they are there, especially when the other blokes driving 'on the line' and takes you out.
-
its cool dude i totaly understand where youre coming from ,defo if youve got a small family not that driving on the line is something i advice but air bags and abs are the way forward if you want to be safe on the roads these days.
-
i agree on the safer side of things... guess its all down to choice/budget on the day...ive still got a mk4 gti, and no matter how much i loathe the performance id rather be in it in a crash than a mk4....

-
dont you mean than in a mk2 dude?lol me too i guess else how will we be able to enjoy such pleasure?of owning a dub!
-
i like my 2.0, i agree the performance is a let down but mine is still quite nippy, and even cruising at 80mph i can still put my foot down and and it will still pull and carry on accelerating, if i had anything more powerfull i prob crash it as i have a heavy foot sometimes :lipsrsealed:
also i do like the sound of the engine as well, if you get the bite point right on the clutch and give it a little rev it has this really nice grunt/rumble sound
-
nice [picture dude!lol can you do me one?lol
-
sorry had a 2l gti and was dissapointed traded it in 2 months later
-
Did you trade in your Mk4 GTI for your Mk2??
-
