Recently noticed a squealing noise coming from the near side front of my car when braking and also when im driving normally, any ideas what it could be?
-
Wheel bearings?
-
Slightly seized caliper?
-
Front wheel bearings squeal like a stuck pig when they're shot
-
Back plate touching the disc?
-
The car was only MOT'd just before Christmas with no major faults, I was thinking wheel bearing myself how would I go about checking that?
-
Is the sound speed related i.e. does the squealing get louder the faster you go? Remove the wheel and check nothing is sticking or rubbing.
-
Does the note change when cornering putting weight onto the noisy wheel? Turning to the right will put extra weight onto the left wheel. It will quickly get worse if it's a bearing as the bearing will be dry of grease to squeal.
-
When going slowly is it a constant sound or only every revolution?
-
It does get louder the faster I go, anybody know a rough cost of a new bearing?
-
Jack the car up on Axel stands, spin the wheel and see if you reproduce the noise it might be easier to see whats going on before you make a conclusion.
Wheel bearing kits are cheap £18CHEAP-£25VAG its removing them where labour hits you as those nuts are tight for a reason.
Expect no more than £80 per side that might be cheaper depends garage?
But if you are brave take the whole assembly off and get the new bearings taken out and new ones pressed in (hydraulic press) for less than £30 I reckon? The hardest part of DIY is 30mm hub nuts you will need a long bar to get the leverage to undo them. But depends on how you take them off as the tracking might need doing if you remove any off the steering camber parts the hub.
