I currently have HID'S fitted soon to be removed what are the laws on headlight i got told HID'S are illigal yet my 2 mot guys told me its a pass for an mot diy fit hids.
Then i was looking on eBay for bulbs and found yellow ones in the listing it says they are road legal and there low beam bulbs i have seen people with these they don't blind and give a old school look.
Has any one encountered any problems with bulb not being legal ect ect.

You should check if they are capable of consistently and competently identifying their own arses and elbows.
Here is Govt guidelines:

Here is a useful bit of information about HIDs in response to a FOI request:

Just put good quality standard bulbs in, with a relay controlled feed - you will be legal.
-
Relay controlled feed???
Thanks for all the info :).
-
Yes, the original feed to the dip and full beam becomes the switch feed on the relay and you feed directly from a good feed to the actual relay power.
I'm guessing you don't have access to Google to get the above information?
-
I haven't had a chance to look yet Google doesn't always win over general knowledge sometimes.
-
Thing is, HIDs aren't directly illegal.
They're just c*ntish in standard lights, MK4's especially.
-
that's why i want the yellow bulbs they look different and after research legal and will pass an mot as long a direction is correct and colour is the same both sides same as any light.
Want to remove HID ASAP don't have any standard bulbs atm.
-
if your buying yellow bulbs off ebay dont buy the 100w ones they melt headlights

I will look around lol that's not good.
Is that because of the poor headlight wiring or the dodgy bulbs.
-
That is/was perfectly good wiring, that's not designed to carry the extra load of 100w bulbs and I doubt they would have been any brighter, 55w is the max you should use.
-
Ok Thank you.
-
This should help as MK2 lights are like tea lights, same principle for Mk3 and most other cars
http://www.matey-matey.com/uprated_headlight_wiring.shtml
Use a good set of bulbs and switching relay set up gives you proper lights and no attention from the fuzz
-
As stated above, decent bulbs and a relayed feed is sufficient. Its all ive ever done to the mk3's ive owned.
-
Yeh I have 55 watts in they look good are are better than the HIDS I had fitted.

Replaced the H7 bulbs in my Passat last week with Halfords Super Brilliance ones (BOGOF so why not). Made quite a significant difference to the low beam. Good bulbs do make a big difference!
