Title: Servicing question
Post by: mac1967 on 03 January 2014, 18:15
Hi Chaps, my name is Martin and I am "brand new" to the Golf fold.

I'm sure I can look this up on the search but I thought I'd ask just to get things rolling.

I currently own a sprint blue Audi TTS which I am selling. I have seen a Mk 6 Golf GTI for sale with 64,000 miles on the clock for 12.5k. The current owner says it's due for a smaller oil service, but not wanting to sound dubious, could anyone tell me if that sounds right? My TTS is currently going to be serviced at 60,000 miles and that is a major service.

Would any of you good peeps be able to she any light on the major/minor service intervals pls.

By the way, I believe the GTI Mk6 is a chain and not a belt.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Martin

Hi mate welcome, i have gtd so don't take my word as gospel from a vw side of things a minor service is oil and filter, major is oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and a full "health check" that would include looking over the car and checking if it has any fault codes, the gti is a chain HOWEVER!!!! have a look at the topic at the top of the mk6 golf badge and read about the stories of woe, the timing belt tensioner has a tendency to stick in cold weather or not unstick have a read and this causes the timing chain to "jump" this pretty much results in a written off engine

Yeah as above however its nothing to do with cold weather it's just a design fault so there is always going to be a what if when buying second hand! Read the sticky!!

Honestly it pains me to say this but I wouldn't touch a second hand GTI 09-11 plate unless its either:

a: Had an updated tensioner
b: Had an engine replacement for this comes with a new tensioner
c: Was under warranty and this was extended with VW direct with a letter from then saying if this fault arose THEY WILL PAY 100%

For ultimately there is some guy on here who's engine has gone and VW and refusing to cover the cost, this scenario is still on gong so we won't know the true outcome and if they change there mind but anyway its £6000 if they don't!

Well I know if I bought a car for £12,000 and had to pay half of that a year later I would be pretty upset and most likely could not afford to fix it.

Sorry to be negative but VW have really annoyed me on this one I am lucky and got mine fixed for £600 but one day they will say no and it's a risk VW won't tell you about so I feel I must.

Back on a positive note you can have the tensioner replaced for about £500 yourself so just do this problem solved but this would need to be 3rd party not direct...

With regards to servicing your original query ha ha

What age is the car first of all, this determines the intervals, also what has the current owner had it on, long life = 20,000 service intervals or time & distance = 10,000

Yeah I think your referring to a cold start after the cars been sat a while. This is when tensioner kicks in before the oil pressure builds.

Any after late 2010 should be fine mate, there has only been a few that failed with the first revision tensioner. but 51 plate on wards and you're golden.

Think he means 61 plate onwards

To the OP, what year is the car you're looking at?

I thought the tensioner was updated in May 2010. So 2011 cars should have the new tensioner no?
I hope they do as mine is 2011 with 3 months vw warranty left. I have access to online parts catalog and it does say from may 2010 that the tensioner is the newer part number (see thread and bits ken from skoda forum)

Ah right thanks,so if I am reading that right then, the revisions have been not a lot of good either then?

Is it just a case of fingers crossed then or is there something I could do?

It makes me feel a bit like getting shut tbh.
Title: Timing chain tensioner issue reply
Post by: Snoopy on 04 January 2014, 00:56
If you look at the failures of the cars world wide its mainly 2009 and early 2010 cars.
Keep in mind its a small percentage of cars out there too.
Yes there has been a few 2011 cars round the world but nowere near the same percent as 09 early 2010.
Only read maybe 1 or 2  2012 world wide failed caused by the tensioner failure and its not clear if they are early 2012 cars.
So im hoping that may on 2012 tensioner they have sorted the issue.

Q: it is also worth keeping in mind that it is the ratchet on the tenisoner that fails. Whens the rachet uses?
Answer: When the cars got low oil pressure.
Q: When else in theory may the ratchet maybe under stress and maybe used apart from when the cars not running?
A: When your too lazy to check your oil level and wait until the LOW oil pressure warning light comes on the dash!

Without full facts and history of all cases we dont know the full cause of failures imo all we know is that its a certain part thats failing.

If your worried like me about the tensioner on earlier cars do what im planning to do and what a few others have already done and change it to the latest may 2012 specification one. It should cost no more than £350 to get a specialist to do the job. I myself am looking on it as a consumable item to change every 3 to 4 years. If the car had a timeing belt it would need replacing every 4 years at a similar cost anyway.

Must admit I often do wish i had waited a year and a half more now and bought a new shadow blue edition 35 GTI instead. No chance of me findings one now in the spec i would want in my favourate colour. Still would have the future cost of changjng the belt. These engine's also have there issues just not as catastrophic an outcome as the EA888 units.

Its also worth a note that mk7 GTI use the same part number tensioner with a different letter on the end. It would be interesting to know and see if this is another revision of the tensioner or a different part altogether and if its the same part but just a new revision why its not listed as a spares part for the mk6 to replace the may 2012 part. We need someone with ETKA to keep an eye on the tensioner part numbers.
