Hi all,
I've just bought some secondhand 17" Monza wheels and would like to fit some winter tyres. I've checked the reviews on line and the Nokian wrd3 seem to do well and are well priced. I've also looked at Continental winter contact ts850 but these are more expensive. I was wondering if anyone has experience of these tyres or would recommend something else. Also is it cheaper to buy the tyres in the summer rather than now? My local supplier has nothing available so i will probably have to buy off the net or wait until
later in the year
Cheers
Matt

I have used both the Nokians and Continental, little difference in performance in my view, although the Nokians were fitted to the GTI and the Continentals to a 105BHP Touran, Would recommend either, depends on cost to a certain extent, both are good in my view.

Any winter tyre is going to be better than a summer tyre when it gets colder. Generally people don't push on as much when it's cold/damp/greasy etc, so I don't believe that so called premium tyres are as essential as they may be for summer use.
I'm on my third winter using a set of Hankook Ice Bears and have found them to be very good.

I've got Uniroyal MSPlus66 on mine, although in 18's.
Not had any snow yet, but in the heavy rain they were superb.
Made by Continental and get good write ups online. Got mine from Camskill for just under £100 each.
cheers, Chris.

The Uniroyals look good but unfortunately Camskill are out of stock and they are far more expensive at Mytyres. Might be worth waiting until later in the year.

They may only get cheaper as the weather gets warmer. I have the Nokian WR in 18's. First time i have used a winter tyre and even though its pretty mild the wet weather performance is impressive. I think Mytres are the same people as one of the big german tyre retailers, mine shipped from Germany in a couple of days

I've got a set of Hankook icept evo 310s on the golf and a set of Michelin Alpine A4 on my Polo, Hankooks have taken about 500 miles to bed in before that they felt aweful, coping ok with 300bhp but I much prefer the Michelins on the polo all be it they were silly money in 18s
All boils down to who has stock

I have some 205/55/16 Nankang sv2 on 16s what I used the past winter and was more than happy with them for £200 the set. Very soft though so not ideal when the weathers warmer or you really push on, which I dont do in winter anyway.

Kuhmo KW27 225x45x17 on the GTI and Hankook Winter i'Cept W310 on our other car. No probs with either but haven't tested the Hankooks in the snow yet. Kuhmo's on the Golf are great in snow and ice (been on last 3 winters) and didn't break the bank. Also loads quieter than the summer Bridgestones

Another vote for Hankooks here albeit mine are W300 'Ice Bears', ran them for 4 winters now and been spot on
