Title: Tailgate hydraulic rams
Post by: Neil gti on 01 January 2014, 17:58
I've got a problem with one or both the rams on my tailgate, when I lift the tailgate it doesn't stay up and falls on my head
Is they a way to test them ? Or shall I just buy 2 new ones ?

It's not really worth messing about, just get a pair of new ones. I've just had to do this on my wife's Polo. I bought a pair off e-bay but plenty out there at various prices

Some times the cold temperatures seem to affect them.

When it warms up a bit they return to normal-probably a sign they are starting to fail though?

Thanks for the replies

I think I will go and get a new pair of struts today, not a good look having to put a hard hat on every time in open the boot
As for the boot pop mod, I think that is done just by turning the standard ones upside down, I may try it when I fit the new ones
Thanks again,

Just had a quick look at the pop mod, a couple more parts are needed for the pop mod

Fitted 2 new gas struts today and all is well

Only 1 was goosed as it could be pressed down really easy once removed and the other my full body weight on it could hardly compress it
Fitted the 2 new ones tho and the boot flys up now, so instead of smacking me on the back of the head it now hits me under the chin

I have the boot pop up done.I followed the instructions on YouTube. Its dead easy to find and it lists the stuff you need.Skoda struts are needed from memory.I did this on the mk5 and transferred them to the mk6.In the winter though the struts need a hand to open due to the cold.

Just need the shorter pins and different bump stops then turn the struts upside down

I've done the boot pop as we'll it's ace! Really handy when you've got your hands full! Bought a kit off someone, slightly bigger rams than stock

You don't rotate the struts, you spin the bracket round that they attach to.You then,at the other end where the strut fits to the door,it pushes onto a pin. This pin is replaced with a longer one. Then the buffers where the tailgate closes  are replaced with ones that have a spring in them. This pushes the tailgate and gives it momentum enough for the struts to take over when you press your key fob.
It's that long ago since I did it but I found the part number for the struts
Skoda 6y0827550c
The longer pins I think I got from Seat and the springy buffers from VW.
