Fits here at front of engine behind the main engine mount

I think that's a crank sensor i had to change mine when car wouldn't start.

If thats what it is then will definitely need replacing!

indeed they are pretty cheap to replace not so easy with engine in but you will have no trouble.
Just a quick question how hard was it to remove your oil heat exchanger thingy to the left of crank sensor oil filter screws onto it.

Bloody difficult!

Its got a thin nut on the big hollow tube screw thread thing that the filter screws onto.
You have to undo that to get the oil cooler off so you can get to the other two bolts behind it.

I am discovering that this is not an easy engine to work on as everything is either obscured or behing something that you have to get off first!
I only managed to get to that thin nut when I had pulled off the car front

that's not good i thought it might be had to remove engine mount for crank sensor well il make sure i have many hours spare before attempting this job thanks for letting me know wish i didn't ask  :lipsrsealed: lol

To remove and refit the housing should only take between 30 mins and a hour before spending time refilling and removing air locks.
Just make sure you have a new metal gasket for the block if you remove the housing, heat exchanger should come with a new rubber seal.
It may be worth replacing the engine oil with the filter and thermostat at the same time as you will need to renew the coolant.

Also the crank position sensor is not to bad to change once the starter is removed with the front engine mount.

That really is a joke mate!
One nut on the starter motor was impossible to get at due to the fan motor!
I dont see how you can say its easy!

I've heard so many people complain about changing the crank shaft sensor but once id whipped the front engine mount bracket out of the way i didn't thin it was all that bad tbh. :undecided:

Not easy!!! You need to remove the front engine mount (well on my 8v i had to) also dont get a cheapo make as you will replace it before you crank your car. I have a febi fitted to mine now and its been good.

I didn't have too much trouble doing it other than the engine dropping and scaring the hell out of me when I pulled the starter off...I even had the engine supported by a two ton jack but still managed to drop a bit..

The cost here is relative I think as if you put a cheap crank sensor on (£15-20) vs a better one for £50 then you might end up doing the job again really soon...

I know some engines you don't have to remove anything except the oil filter...(lucky them) mine was a AGG so had to remove engine mount, starter...and then got it off...

will take more than 30 minutes the first time you do it...and you can lube up the starter when you take it off if you have to remove it...:)

Everyone will need to do this job sooner or later....but you get to know your car better...:)

Makes me very reluctant to sell mine hearing all the horror stories about particulate filters and EGR valves...etc etc....

Stick with the golf...where else can you get used parts from other owners for cheap? Even new replacement parts are not really expensive...:)
Good luck in changing the crank sensor...then make sure your timing is right and most likely your car will be good to go!

Yeh will replace everything done thermostat already that was a pain in the ar5e have to remove so many mounts and bolts.

I cant understand how you say it was easy!
I can only assume you are doing it on a non aircon car with only one fan hence the fan motor is not in the way of one of the big starter?engine mount bolts!!!

I have replaced the crank position sensor on both 8v's and 16v's and yes it is more difficult with the air con fan and evaporator in the way but if you remove the front mount bolt first and jack on the bell housing to tilt the engine back a couple of centimetres it gives more room.
At the end of the day its just 3 nuts 3 bolts and a cap head bolt.

No no aircon on mine. Guess I was lucky..in that sense...

That's a crank sensor - awful, awful job - was a front end off job for me because everything had rusted and rounded.

Everything is awful!
I have never worked on a car that was so complicated before!
I thought my Pug 405 Mi16 was bad but this is incredible!

I need to take everything off my engine to fit onto the new as that is just a block and head (with new internals of course!)
So many brackets and mountings that are inaccessible!

How you are supposed to reach some bolts/nuts I just dont know!

Surely it cant be that difficult to transfer parts from one engine to another if theyre both removed and on the bench / stand?

Why don't you just disconnect the down pipe from the cat?

That's all I ever do.

Dont have that kind of room.
Dont have an engine stand either.
My bench has go the new head on it at the moment. I still have to reassemble the new engine and was thinking if I took stuff off in sequence and put them onto the new engine that would be best as bolts etc. wouldnt get lost or rather I would not need to label everything.
But hasnt worked out that way.

Done that!
But that would mean taking the front off completely which I didnt want to do and cant now due to the aircon.

Am managing to get to the four bolts/studs under the connector plate so that should suffice

Oh and I did manage to find my Haynes manual yesterday so maybe I should go have a good read!

Ok no worries, I would have kept it for myself but having just checked the part numbers I believe the TDI one is different so useless to me.
