hi, i was going to look at a 1.6 2000 Golf tomorrow but the lady has just mentioned she has to top it up with oil fairly regularly. she said it isnt leaking as theres no puddle on the drive just the light comes on and she tops it up?! dont think she knows a lot but to be honest I dont really know what this would mean.
Should I avoid it?
thanks

I would say steer clear and keep looking.

 Not the best of ideas relying on the low oil warning light to tell you that the oil is low as this can often start to cause damage due to a lower pressure  look for signs of blue smoke after initial start up/warm up period and once warm try a stretch of downhill road (if possible) and let your foot off the acc pedal, once level again give it a tap on the throttle and look for signs of blue smoke on the over run pointing to possible valve stem oil seals worn or valve guides worn a comp test will point to piston ring/bore wear done wet and dry also the spark plugs will be wet and oily,if your after a 1.6 tbh theres a few about i personally would avoid this one  hth

Wow. Repeatedly driven until the oil light comes on.
This would mean the engine
A: is very close to bring irreparably f**ked.
B: is f**ked already.
Avoid
