Title: Strange sound
Post by: Mcwill on 28 December 2013, 16:41
Hi guys, after covering a couple of hundred miles in my rebuilt abf engine conversion I have noticed there is whining noise coming from what I think is the alternator?
As far as I'm aware the used the alternator off the 8v engine. Is the noise normal or is there a reason? Any ideas

Belt over tightened? Itll put extra strain on bearing and cause them to whine. Simple solution is remove belt start car and see does it whine

Leave it and tell everyone it's supercharged?

Turned out to be power steering pump.

You sure it's the pump itself? Mine whines occasionally but if I go full lock a few times it stops. I have a slight leak in the LP hose so air gets into the system and makes the noise, going full lock bleeds the air through.

Just what the garage have told me, they said they removed the powersteering belt and the noise stopped. Haven't had it fixed yet.

If you find a place that will actually replace the hose without spending a fortune post back. Any hydraulic place round here won't do any work if it's for pas or fuel.

what colour/condition is the power steering fluid? id be inclined to change that first, along with new belt and correct tension.

When you drain it have a look not only at the colour of the fluid but to see if it has and metal in There. Indication of damage elsewhere in the system.
