Well I have bought a VR6 as a daily driver so I can sort the anniversary out properly and I paid a good price (I think!) for this Mk3 VR6 in Mystic blue

and both together
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3757/11604851893_d011dff393_z.jpg)
(doesn't the anni look high :embarrassed:)
So plan's are!! First one is to fix a drip of water from the back of the engine
(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2861/11604967244_b31e50e91c_z.jpg)
but I'm not sure of how the VR6 water system works so I am going to use a mates ramp to investigate next week (It has had some pipe work done at some point so I'm hoping it's an easy fix!!)
and then I need to sort the wheels, suspension as it's crazy low! and then do some simple tidying as there's a few bits of body that need minor tarting up!
the car did come with a full miltek system and recaro trim oh and that VR6 sound
so even with the issues it has I can live with them at the mo
-
Milltek & VR6 = Amazing noise!
I'm guessing you won't be doing much to this and spending your time/money on the Anni?
-
yep this is just to see what all the fuss about VR6's is and will only be getting the essentials as the money will go on the anni!
oh and I agree VR6 & Milltek is very very
-
Well I got bored and have already started to play
The all red's (converted from clears) have come of the anni as they were fairly illegal!! :lipsrsealed: and they are now
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7442/11626444963_8cbdcfd762_z.jpg)
I have also bought a budget suspension kit (shocks and springs to VR6 spec) which I sell for £150 delivered (FK Automotive or TA technix is what I sell at this price ) and it will lower it 30mm from factory height
I have also bought a set of suspension arm bushes by Meyle (my sell £18 for all 4) along with correct VR6 spec top mounts again by Meyle (my sell £30 a pair with bearings, Note: these are uprated VR6 type)
I have a full brake set up with goodridge hoses coming from Andre (Khare) on here, I'm not sure which car to use them on as yet but the VR brakes are much better than the anni one's!! (so we will see on that one!)
Oh and the white wheels are for sale (£150 takes them with all legal tyres.... pm me for info)

thought I should update this and say the water leak is annoying me!
It only looses water when it's pressurised and I think it's dripping from pipework and/or rad bottle but looking today there was no sign of where the water was going even though the level had dropped on the level! (I had to give the cars some rev's to get level to drop but at least the noise was good whilst I was doing that)
any other work is off until the water issue is sorted! (the anni goes in on Friday so I will be car less unless I solve this in the next day or two)
-
I want a vr just purly for the noise :embarrassed:
I had a crazy leak with mine. After the car had reached its temp i would turn the engine off and when i got out i would see a flow off water. Turned out that the coolant cap seal was shot. Replaced the lid and all good
-
I will try the cap from the anni and see if that works (I will give anything a go to see if it means not spending!)
-
Auxiliary water pump or heater matrix hose/s would be my guess.
Also, add a BMC CDA into that equation and the noise becomes epic!
-
well it's confirmed the matrix has gone!! so dash out time!!
I was quoted 10 hours for this job!! (hopefully I won't be paying for 10 hours as I have stripped 90% of a mk3 dash within 2-3 hours myself but I just don't have enough time at the moment!)
-
Shame we so far apart as Billy loves stripping dash's!
-
Is there really no other way to get these matrixs out? Such a night mare, lol,
-
Bridge it, you wont have any heat but summers coming
-
Summer, what's that?
-
Summer, what's that?
-
If you bridge it thereis still a fair amount of water in the matrix itself and pipes.
-
I like my cars to be right (even if it means spending!!) and the VR6 is going to be a mobile demonstrator (in a way) so needs to be 100%
(I sell the febi matrix at around £40 delivered so they aren't huge money to buy, just a shame it's not so cheap to fit!)
-

That will soon find its way into the foot well dont worry
I mean to bridge it so you can see if the level stabilises before doing the matrix or be able to run it in event of a known matrix leak.
-
well this is an update on my water leak (found and fixed, I just need another 5 hours to put it back together!)
What a nightmare!!
-
Oh I forgot to say... My news wheels have arrived :lipsrsealed:
just think the early 90's and 15" Azev's (15's were a large wheel at the time!)
-
Still cant see the matrix in that photo!
Hope I never have to do that job!
Oh and its a good job you work for yourself now!
Pics of wheels please!

What a nightmare!!
Agreed, think id be crying getting to that stage! :( lol
-
worst thing is I found a lot of bodges the last owner has done!!
and that wasn't just the matrix that was sealed with silicon!!
-
Well as asked here's a preview of my new wheels
(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3770/11841528226_e1cd12a704_z.jpg)
Just need to swap tyres (they are fitted with 195/45's!) and I will be rolling in the 90's again  (I am unsure if they will need spacers as yet??)
-
Feel for your pain with the matrix, I hated doing mine on the octavia.
Wheels will look good fitted.
-
Loving those Azev's.
-
I was going to get those wheels for my Pug!
-
Here's how she sits with the wheels fitted
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7346/11909668496_2cb494274e_c.jpg)
15" 90's style Azev's
oh and she does have a few clearance issues due to being stupidly low and having 205's fitted so I'm looking for some 195's and 6mm spacers (and a height life but that's due with the shock kit next week)
oh and I have found multiple bodges which has given me more work to do (abs sensors being cut and taped!! airbag slip ring being glued!! so I now have dash lights galore!!)
-
Oh the joys of second hand cars!
-
Good work with sorting out the rest of your previous owners bodges  i feel for you mate i know how that feels  Azev's looking  :afro:
-
I would of given up but take it for a blast and the noise (and power which even for a vr feel strong!) and I can forgive the car
let's hope the next suspension/brake work makes it even better!
-
Classic wheels but not sure they look right on a mk3 :undecided:

:afro: good job you haven't given up i love the sound of the vr
look forward to seeing your progress i should say it will
-
Well I have swapped the coilovers for a shock/spring kit which has given me clearance (and new top mounts all round has also cured a knock it had!)
New stance! It does need to settle and also needs tracking doing but it drives much better than before (next is to sort the water issue! Well dry the car out properly so carpets out and a de-humidifier will be getting some use)
oh and a clean as she's not looking her shiny best at the mo

Looking good :afro:
-
well she is broken again (well a major miss fire when warm) and vag-com shows no issues (well apart from a new abs fault!!) and asking around a new temp sensor will get fitted (as vag-com showed the temp to be very low compared to what the car said)
I nearly lost all interest with the car last week and considered breaking her for parts but was convinced to fix and keep trying to improve! Well all I can say is "under £100 in parts and I will fix, any more and I will scrap!"
let's see if the miss-fire is cheap and easy (oh and the abs issue!)
-
Love how ridiculously small the 8v looks when side by side with the VR! lol.
-
It does look particularly puny though as it goes....also reminds you just how front heavy the VR6'S are.
-
The 8v lump looks puny even next to a 1.4! And your right about the weight,
I fitted the springs supplied with a VR suspension kit to the 8v as the coil rating was what I call too low for the heavy engine (890kg compared to 1020kg which are now fitted on the VR)
(b.tw TUV German rules/regs state spring ratings, It's not like I'm a geek and search this stuff out! :nerd:)
-
Oh the joys of owning a vw
Could you tell me about the major miss fire please. Do you mean when the miss fire happened did it feel like someone just slammed the brakes down? Yoh put your foot on the gas and the revs bounced like mad cutting out and firing back up? If so then i would check the crank sensor (fiddle with wires) if it dont play up then MIGHT be the coil on its last legs.
-
The 8v engine makes me laugh every time I see it! I used to love mine when I had it, but I don't think I could ever go back to a car that slow now
-
Well I haven't got any further with repairs (I have spent a week abroad and otherwise being far too busy to sort things!!)
So my plans are in the next week check the crank sensor and coil (I bought a coil but it was delivered smashed by the courier and paypal are being useless and the seller is now ignoring any request for refund!!) but I seem to of lost interest so if anyone can shed some light on other things to check whilst I'm at it! Other wise it will be for spares very soon!
The issue is, when cold it starts first time and runs 100%, after a few minutes and when it starts to get warm it runs very lumpy and if you blip the throttle it seems to miss like it's over fuelling and holding it back, driving it has no power (but doesn't stall). I have had it on vag-com and a snap on reader and both show no faults (or miss fire!).
I don't want to be spending lots of ££ as it was only a play thing and has had enough spent already.
-
I forgot to update this but I can say she now runs and has all the lost ppt back (it was the coil pack). After a quick drive I'm still weighing my options to keep or sell.
And i have being offered a couple of swaps and had a cash offer (I have a mk3 lined up which was owned by a forum member and good customer of mine but the guy that bought it doesn't understand mk3 prices anw thw fact there not worth much).
Will my next update be its sold or its a keeper?
-
My bet is on Its Sold!
-
I concur.
-
I keep looking at 6cyl cars again.. You're welcome to the a3 I have
