Title: New Member with a Mk6 GTI
Post by: ChuffGTI on 26 December 2013, 23:47
Hello. A few months ago I bought an ex-Hertz rental (yes, silly idiot that I am) Mk6 GTI from a main VW dealership. It was 12 months old with 14.5K miles. It appeared to be in very good condition and, although it had obviously been checked over by the dealership I also had it inspected by the AA. No faults found. I have now done 3.5K miles and the car drives beautifully. The only problem is the fuel consumption. On a long motorway run, sticking to the 70 mph limit, I can achieve no better than about 34 mpg. Around town it is easily less than 25 mpg. Overall the consumption has been 29.9mpg, measured by me, or 31 mpg shown on the computer.

I have seen figures of over 40 mpg for motorway driving quoted by some people with the same model. As a result I got another VW dealership to check things, but they told me they could find no fault with fuel consumption and my figures are "about average" for the car.

I have to say that I drive smoothly and efficiently and certainly am not a "boy racer". If the car had been thrashed when hired out by Hertz, could this have had an effect longer term on fuel consumption?

Hi, welcome.

Those figures sound about right to me.  I average 30mpg, mainly mix of town, rural driving, with a bit of motorway. About 25-27mpg round town and 34/35mpg on long motorway runs.

Post this question in the mk6 section and you'll get more response.

Many thanks. I have now repeated my question in the Mk6 forum. I am encouraged that my fuel consumption is no worse than yours, but rather disappointed that it is all I can probably expect as a norm! So much for the manufacturer's figure of about 38mpg….
