Hi Guys,
Just about to buy one, its got just over 50k on the clock full VWSH
What are the common faults?/what should i look for?
DMF? etc??
Cheers

Apart from just checking how it feels, check the history for any major work. There was a recall on these cars for the coil packs, however if its a later GTI then you may have got away with it.
There are loads of threads here with problems people have had, browse through and read what they were and what was the cause, then just use that as a guide to help you look over the car.
Also take a friend, second set of eyes is always good.
-
Thanks for that, I bought the car, picking up in New Year :)
-
Nice one. I would personally send it into a dealer for a full health check and diagnostics, think they're free with any work done or a few quid, but it'll give you a detailed list of anything you should repair or at least be aware of. Any parts they say needed will be listed with part numbers which you can then use online to look for a better deal.

Hmm, thanks for that, may just do that..
The car has full VW service history, and covered 52k...
Want to get mud flaps all round for it, and some privacy glass of rear half...looking forward to becoming a mk5 owner....

Check
RUST ON FRONT ARCHES
CAM FOLLOWER WILL NEEED REPLACING (guides on youtube).
THERMOSTAT FAILURES
CHECK ALL ELECTRICS
MECHATRONIC UNIT IF DSG
And many more that you'd normally check with a used car.

cheers for that, i'm hoping at 52k i shouldn't need much of that....

Mine at 67k needed all of that. FSH.
Cam followers are a know weak point and last around 20-30k causing cam damage if not replaced. Check the follower was replaced.

Plus wheel arch rust is an inherent design flaw. The wheel arch liner rubs the arch to bare metal causing corrosion and VW claim it's a mechanical fault - only currently offering 50% towards the repair leaving around £500 to pay - so check and haggle.
-
Oh and don't forget to check wheels for corrosion (VW won't cover this) if they are 18" monza's
-
Yeah 18" Monza, all been refurbished....cheers

Cool just don't overlook the cam follower mate, if it's not been done previously - it'll need doing now or risk a new cam.

Yeah well worth it and not hard at all.
The coating on mine was gone completely and was at the point of causing damage.
Very poor design from VW

Cheers guts, useful advise, where do you get the new follower from VW?
-
Straight from vw mate, or TPS. Not sure on the part number like.
Not expensive and an easy job! :-)
