Does using gloves on the touch screen work? I wear gloves on those really cold days and can still use the RCD510 in the mk6 whilst wearing them. Does it also work wearing gloves with the mk7 screens?
-
Yes it works fine.

Probably depends on the glove material but you can always upgrade to some North Face Etip Gloves

Wearing gloves means the touch screen doesn't work for me. Leather gloves seem to not respond. Bit annoying.

It's because it has a capacitive touch screen. Same as most smart phones. The RCD510 had an older generation touch screen. Basically the newer touch screens use the conductivity of your finger to "close" the circuit on the screen. I have seen touchscreen gloves at a couple of gadget type shops.

Really odd my gloves are leather and it works fine on my DNS screen.

A lot of leather glove wearers on here

Unless the gloves have an etip, then i wouldn't expect them to work with the units in the MK7.
The touch screen units are quite different to those used in the older RNS-510. The RNS units used a resistive type of touchscreen, whereas the units in the MK7 use capacitive type.
The resistive touchscreen itself is made up of several layers, the topmost of which flexes under your finger or stylus, and is pushed back onto a layer behind it. This effectively completes a circuit, telling the unit which part of the screen is being pressed. This then is irrespective of whether the user is weather gloves or not, it just relies on pressure.
The capacitive units in the MK7 touchscreens don’t rely on pressure, but rather they use electrodes to sense the conductive properties of objects, such as your finger. So, they don’t rely on having an object pressing particularly hard on their surface, but will only react to certain objects. Prod one with a standard stylus or gloved finger and you’ll get nowhere. Using a capacitive type (like mobile phones), allows the gestures such as pinching the screen to zoom in on the nav screen or dragging the time line on a music track form instance.

That's a bummer for the winter months.

.... Try putting the heater on ....B-)

I tried driving with my hands under my legs being warmed by the heated seats no luck though.
-
Do the gloves really make much difference in the cold? Never really thought about wearing gloves while driving....

There's something not quite right about wearing gloves when driving to my mind, unless you are a racing driver.

Or a retired elderly gent with brown leather gloves.

Retired with Black gloves here

It keeps my hands warm, once the heater is up, I usually take them off. :embarrassed:

Hubby got me some Mechanix driving gloves from Demon Tweeks for Christmas. Dunno if they will work with the touch screen but looking forward to trying it out. Also got me a black VW GTI jacket…. proper brownie points!
