Is your engine an abf? If so, then the ones they stock won't fit.

I came across this issue when I ordered one from eBay a few years ago. My original ABF sump plug was f**ked anyway so drilled it and replaced with a large bolt which was tapped and bonded into the sump then the bolt was drilled and tapped to accept the new magnetic sump plug. Killed two birds with one stone.

ive seen somewhere, possibly on "fast n loud" where when they bedded the engine in, they used a strong magnet and stuck it on the inside of the sump. it sticks it self to the sump and will collect the bedding in material, obviously you need to be careful where u stick it, so it doesnt get bashed and do damage, then run the engine in, drop the sump again and remove the magnet and all the running in material,
In my own head it seams a good idea to drop the sump after running in, to make sure there is as little as possible material left in the sump,
probably a rubbish idea, but thought id share it,, :)

I'm tight so I magnetised the standard jobby on a mag chuck

Abf has an alloy sump
-
This is true although a steel pan can be fitted as I pondered on it when i couldn't find an alloy replacement. You can buy baffled steel pans for not too much money as well which isn't a bad idea on an engine like this.
-
You want it on the plug so you don't have to drop the sump.
If you have swarf in there you have problems
-
your gonna get some material after run in, so if it was me, id drop sump and flush through, then refill, but I have never rebuilt an engine,,,,, yet ;) hopefully next year 1.8t going on.. :) but from what from ive read and seen id def take sump back off, after run in as its not a hard job and then your sure whats being going on.. :)
could be horse poo but prob what id do, especially if you cant locate a magnetic sump plug..
Good Luck! looking forward to seeing the results! :)

I do have a plan B!
That Diesel engine I took the crank out of has a sump!
Said sump has a small hold so gonna check if this magnetic plug fits that sump.
If so will fit that as an interim as I will be doing at least 3 oil changes.
Then after the third I can fit the very nice aquablasted sump (courtesy of JNL Racing) and by that time have found and obtained the correct sump plug!
-
Plan B works!
Its also a steel sump.

Measured that sump plug today and its definitely 26mm so that makes it a VR6 sump and plug!
Well thats what a lot of websites say is the size for a VR6 sump plug and that is what I have today ordered from the magneticoilplugs website along with a set of 6 magnets.
-
Len the abf uses a m26 and and all other mk3's use the normal m14 (even the vr6 so the listings say, I will know soon when I service the VR)
I did some digging and the brands list m14 as std fitment but I asked my german engine people who said m26 (I am going to keep a plug or two in stock (non magnetic))
-
have ordered an M26 one plus some filter magnets so that should sort it!
